Summary
Bloomsbury presents Soldier ‘I’ by Michael Paul Kennedy, Pete Winner and Andy McNab, read by Paul Thornley.
The true story of a legendary SAS soldier who participated in the battle of Mirbat and assaulted the Iranian Embassy to free the hostages held within.
No publicity, no media. We move in silently, do our job, and melt away into the background. If you have the stamina, the willpower and the guts, we'll welcome you with open arms and make you one of us. And if you haven't, then it's been very nice knowing you.
Eighteen years in the SAS saw Pete Winner, codenamed Soldier 'I', survive the savage battle of Mirbat, parachute into the icy depths of the South Atlantic at the height of the Falklands War, and storm the Iranian Embassy during the most famous hostage crisis in the modern world.
For the first time Pete also details his close-protection work around the world, from the lawless streets of Moscow to escorting aid convoys into war-torn Bosnia.
He also unveils the problems of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder faced by many Special Forces veterans, and how he battled his own demons to continue his roller-coaster career. This is his story, written with a breathtaking take-no-prisoners attitude that brings each death-defying episode vividly to life.

Great book
I read this book many, many years ago, but it was great to hear it this time. the narrator did a very good job on telling the story. Well worth getting.

A solid rendition
Jumps about a bit and the attempt to include time in the hospital as a link is unnecessarily complicated and an attempt at being unnecessarily clever. Otherwise an very insightful glimps into a life so far removed from that of us mere vanilla mortals we can only listen in awe. Solid, warts and all.

Superb. True front line SAS soldier recounts inside exploits of great missions
Excellent retelling of the SAS missions of post 1970 missions from one of its foremost front line soldiers. Brutal honesty with great detail and exciting retelling.
Narration is compelling and articulately told.

Full of characters and colour…
An authentic account of key operations by, and the general culture of, the SAS. Following on from this, a gritty and telling account of the struggle to adjust to a ‘normal’ life after years filled with the prospect of being called into extremely violent situations at any time. I was disappointed to hear Pete’s take on psychological support, far more available now due to veterans pathways being set-up in IAPT and elsewhere. His negatively about such help seeking and lack of understanding of what the process brings, the nature of PTSD, what is and isn’t required ( in terms of the qualification of ‘experience’) to meaningfully help somebody is, I’m sure, born out of his own experience. However, it isn’t accurate and reflects an attitude which, at worst, could reinforce the avoidance which means that the average time veterans take to seek help is 14 years after the development of problems. As a former comrade of his once told me, ‘that wait usually includes prolonged substance misuse, two marriages and a jail sentence’. If you know you need help, please keep moving until you find what you need.

Brilliant !!!!
A fantastic price of work. Well written and a really good choice for the narration. Anyone with the slightest amount of interest in the UKSF would find this interesting.
