Summary
Mona has almost everything: money, friends, social status...everything except for freedom. Languishing in her golden cage, she craves a sense of belonging. Desperate for emotional release, she turns to a friend who introduces her to a world of glitter, glamour, covert affairs and drugs.
There she meets Ali, a physically and emotionally wounded man, years younger than her. Heady with love, she begins a delicate game of deceit that spirals out of control and threatens to shatter the deceptive facade of conservatism erected by Lahori society, and potentially destroy everything that Mona has ever held dear.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Highly recommended!
What an interesting delve into a fragile world. Observant and thought-provoking, In the Company of Strangers shows the contradictions of Pakistani society. There's rich and poor, triviality and depth, love vs duty. It's fair to say the novel is full of the dilemmas of life and presents challenging issues.
The main characters are well-drawn, and Awais creates some brilliant descriptions which are realistic rather than flattering. It is an impressive debut, and I'm left with thoughts of a country and a people that were previously unknown to me. The plot ramps up the pace towards the tense conclusion, and I genuinely couldn't guess how the story would end. I'm still pondering it!
Esh Alladi does a great job of the audio narration, with distinguishable differences in character and tone, which helps bring the story to life.
The novel stares head-on at uncomfortable subjects and shows the complexities of people with opposing desires. In the Company of Strangers is both brutal and tender, and I highly recommend it. Expect the unexpected!

A compelling plot, fascinating characters, and vivid, evocative writing make Awais Khan's IN THE COMPANY OF STRANGERS a fantastic novel. And Esh Alladi's energetic and nuanced performance makes it a great listen. Alladi expertly differentiates the characters for audio and provides a gripping narration throughout. Highly recommended.
