Summary

When a body is found floating in London's Royal Albert Dock, successful public relations expert Kay Christie is sent to quiet the media, but things get complicated when it emerges that she knew the victim.

As events spiral out of control, Kay discovers that those close to her may be harbouring another secret - the story of a missing girl. Can Kay discover the truth before her life unravels and she risks losing everything?

In the Wake questions whether we can ever truly leave our pasts behind and explores the lengths that we will go to protect the people that we love.

Nearly gave up, but was interested to know how it played out

Felt like the author threw all their ideas into the one book, various storylines, descriptive language and lesbian sex then tried to wind them all in together.

I don’t very often give up on a book but found myself very tempted early on with this. I persevered and it was ok, but I felt the detail of the sex was unnecessary. The various plot lines contrived to link and I’m sure the narrator called one of the characters Tim rather than Jim several times.

When just two people were having a conversation, each sentence ended with “said x” or “said y” despite it being quite clear which of them was speaking, and that was quite annoying and unnecessary.

It whiled away an afternoon while I was busy doing something else, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Not for me

This was a suggested by audible based on previous reads. I wasn’t really into this book, lots of snipet sexual experiences described, and although I did enjoy 50 shades, this is not something I look for In a book. Much rather have a gruesome crime book. That being said I was also a bit confused about what was happening when, the female detective has an affair with 1 half of a gay couple. The best friend turns out to be marrying the former sex worker who serviced him while away on the front line. His friend is an arrogant sexual deviant. It’s all there but kind of lost the plot a bit. Sorry it’s a no from me.

Just didn’t hang together for me.

I persevered to the end but really didn’t enjoy this. The narration was ok. Emma Powell isn’t one of my favourite narrators. I find her voice a bit jarring for audio but that’s purely personal preference and she did a really good job of working with the material.

The story just didn’t hang together for me. I disliked pretty much all of the characters and the plot seemed to be all over the place. By the time the twist (sort of a twist) came at the end I just didn’t care enough to be excited. There’s an awful lot of pretty graphic sex in the book throughout. I don’t mind if it’s supporting a good story but it wasn’t and I didn’t get any indication they there would be from reading the blurb. It’s a matter of personal taste and I’m sure some people will love it, but I won’t be in a hurry to read another by this author.

need to concentrate on this one.

I now understand all the bad reviews. in my opinion, I had to centrate and reply several sections that I missed when I wasn't obsorbed as much.
a very different storyline and i was expecting terrible long drawn out sex scenes that i was going to have to click the skip 30 sec button quite a lot but it wasnt like that at all
. i also found the sex scenes were written with elegance with a few bad words when ì least expected it, which made me smile.
well done author and narrator.
please give this audio a chance and full obsorbtion and then I think u will enjoy. Allison x

Unexpected graphic sex scenes!

I enjoyed this book, it was well described in places and I liked the style of writing. I wasn’t prepared for the graphic girl sex scenes and as much as I’m not bothered it was out of place and not in the description! Any erotic novel is usually stated as such!
It’s minimal in the book and mostly it’s a good story.

disappointed listen

struggled to finish it as it was too much description of unimportant information that had nothing to do with the story glad it was a plus catalogue read and didn't use my credit on it

Good but with reservations.

I enjoyed the book , the story was clever and well constructed . However the Lesbian sex scenes were over the top and I actually think there should be an indication in the description. I am not remotely homophobic and would have the same opinion for very graphic straight sex .

Jumbled

Honestly, I felt as though I had been listening to two, maybe three books being read at the same time! I thought the missing nurse was going to be the main storyline, but then the focus changed and she seemed to be completely forgotten until much later on. There seemed to be too many main characters which I found confusing. And these characters also seemed to be split personalities, swinging from good and nice to totally wicked and selfish.
The narrator had a pleasant voice but I don't think I will try any more from this author.
