Summary
The foundational and wildly popular go-to resource for influence and persuasion—a renowned international bestseller, with over 5 million copies sold—now revised, adding: new research, new insights, new examples, and online applications.
In the new edition of this highly acclaimed bestseller, Robert Cialdini—New York Times bestselling author of Pre-Suasion and the seminal expert in the fields of influence and persuasion—explains the psychology of why people say yes and how to apply these insights ethically in business and everyday settings. Using memorable stories and relatable examples, Cialdini makes this crucially important subject surprisingly easy. With Cialdini as a guide, you don't have to be a scientist to learn how to use this science.
You'll learn Cialdini's Universal Principles of Influence, including new research and new uses so you can become an even more skilled persuader—and just as importantly, you'll learn how to defend yourself against unethical influence attempts. You may think you know these principles, but without understanding their intricacies, you may be ceding their power to someone else.
Cialdini's Principles of Persuasion:
- Reciprocation
- Commitment and Consistency
- Social Proof
- Liking
- Authority
- Scarcity
- Unity, the newest principle for this edition
Understanding and applying the principles ethically is cost-free and deceptively easy. Backed by Dr. Cialdini's 35 years of evidence-based, peer-reviewed scientific research—including a three-year field study on what leads people to change—Influence is a comprehensive guide to using these principles to move others in your direction.

Time well spent!
Educational, instructional, inspirational and actionable. This book opened my eyes to all the times I have been influenced and have successfully influenced others. My biggest takeaway is that labelling the behaviour allows you to control the outcome. Great work.

Good educational book
The book is full of useful advice, examples and ideas. It's highly ethical even though it may not look like its goal. The only downside is that it's too long.

One of the most important books I have ever read
This is a forensic exploration of the science of influence, a cornerstone of social psychology. It is exhaustively referenced and full of illuminating examples which bring otherwise dry concepts to life.
Why is it so important? First because we rely upon shortcuts (heuristics) to navigate this complex world but these are being devalued by tricksters and frauds. And second because the honest knowledge of these techniques can allow us to do much good by improving compliance with positive initiatives. And in case you think yourself exempt, the scope includes relationships, parenting, buying, selling, politics, safety, justice, warfare… the whole gamut of human life. Indeed I seem to remember even unicellular organisms got a mention.
It’s a wonderful piece of work, and is interweaved with a wry and subtle humour. And Robert Cialdini emerges as an interesting man, and someone it must be fascinating to know.
My only doubt is how to capture and remember all of these ideas to use them in the future.
Brilliant.

Very useful concepts and a pleasure to read
The whole book is very well written and keeps drawing you in. He structures the book with examples and stories that make it gripping and make you want to keep reading and help you remember the concepts.
The main thing though is the fascinating concepts explained in the book with principles which I think will be very useful for me in my life. He explains all the things that marketers and anyone trying to have influence will use on us and the ways that we can have more impact on others.
