About this listen
Jane is trying.
She's been trying for a baby, with increasing desperation as her 30s sail by.
Now, she's trying to make a new start back home with her overprotective, charades-obsessed parents—having left her career and cheating fiancé behind in London.
With an increasing load on her plate, friends and family who think she'll have a perfect life if she only listens to them, and a brain which questions every decision she's ever made, can Jane conquer her demons and step forward on her own?

Brilliant read!
Really enjoyed this book, it was refreshing not to follow a guessable narrative and feature so many flawed and in depth but likeable characters.
Isy reads it perfectly, especially Jonathan’s voice.

Outstanding
I picked this book up because I like Isy’s other work but wasn’t too sure what it would be about from the summary.
Read it.
I love the characters, the depth and complexity of the relationships. I love the place setting, the stereotypes of London mums and the Derbyshire town.
I love the sympathetic way the protests and more political elements of the book are written.
I love the hope throughout the book and i love how in a relatively short period of time you see a character change so much.
Thank you Isy. Another one please?

I really wanted to like this
I adore Isy Suttie. I’ve seen her live, I’ve listened to the love letters countless times, and this sounded like it might be a longer version of that, so I was excited. The character depiction is very similar to Love Letters, which I liked, but I just couldn’t root for the main character. I get the phobic / obsessive angle, but Jane’s stubbornness and selfishness isn’t quirkily charming, it ends up being boring and frustrating. I found myself muttering ‘Oh FFS’ more than once. I’ll stick to live shows.

I cannot imagine this in anyone else’s voice
Isy’s writing is subtle and beautiful. Simultaneously hilarious and real. Jane Is Trying is a lovely book that’s exceptionally well observed. The characters feel true and well-formed. There’s Jane, obviously, but her parents, too. Kelly and her boys are terrific. The living room / role-play scene made me cringe.
All that and it’s brought to life masterfully by Isy herself. I can’t imagine it being in anyone’s voice other than hers and I would recommend this as highly as any audio.

Funny, thoughtful and bittersweet
Despite being a fan of Suttie's, including seeing her performing live and enjoying her previous book The Actual One, I wasn't sure about this at first. The characters, specifically Jane, felt a decade too immature than their actual age of 38 and the story felt a bit chick lit for my tastes. I found that, for a time, I was only listening for Suttie's narration and the odd good line. But, after a while, I was properly drawn in, wanting the best for Jane and sympathising with her situation. Funny, thoughtful and bittersweet, Suttie's got a good way with prose too.

Great read.
I loved the book, so funny it had me giggling in bed 🤣 but the introduction part I found was weak and uninteresting, to the point I almost gave up on it and returned.. I’m glad I didn’t though! Although I was kind of sad of how things worked out in the end. Obviously I can’t say without disappointing readers.
