About this listen
*WINNER OF THE BOLLINGER EVERYMAN WODEHOUSE PRIZE FOR COMIC FICTION 2023*
THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER
‘Funny, clever and sweet’– Sunday Times
‘The much loved comic proves adept at noirish fiction in a debut whose surrealist humour sets it apart’ – Observer
My name is Gary. I’m a thirty-year-old legal assistant with a firm of solicitors in London. To describe me as anonymous would be unfair but to notice me other than in passing would be a rarity. I did make a good connection with a girl, but that blew up in my face and smacked my arse with a fish slice.
Gary Thorn goes for a pint with a work acquaintance called Brendan. When Brendan leaves early, Gary meets a girl in the pub. He doesn’t catch her name, but falls for her anyway. When she suddenly disappears without saying goodbye, all Gary has to remember her by is the book she was reading: The Satsuma Complex. But when Brendan goes missing, Gary needs to track down the girl he now calls Satsuma to get some answers.
And so begins Gary’s quest, through the estates and pie shops of South London, to finally bring some love and excitement into his unremarkable life…
A story with a cast of unforgettable characters, The Satsuma Complex is the brilliantly funny smash hit first novel by bestselling author and comedian Bob Mortimer.
Critic reviews
"Like Spike Milligan, Mortimer has managed to use a novel for his distinctive comedic voice." (The Telegraph)

Warped, mad, very funny and exciting
As much as I enjoyed this, I couldn’t help feel as though I was trapped on a dangerous fair ground ride controlled by a lunatic. Everything a decent thriller should be.

More Mortimer please!
I rarely leave reviews, however I adored this so much and wanted to encourage anyone to give it a try. If you are a fan of Bob, then you will absolutely love the characters within and his narration is in his own inimitable style. An absolute joy from start to finish and I encourage you to think around making the purchase / using the credit

Had me in tears of laughter
I must leave a review as this title has received much criticism for the "awkward" and "wooden" narration from Bob. However this is part of this comedic delivery, and is part of what makes it so funny...for those who have a good sense of humour. Charming story too.

If you like Bob Mortimer telling stories then you’re in luck
I imagine this book will divide opinion somewhat but I reckon if you enjoy his stories on ‘Would I Lie To You’ then you’re probably in safe hands. It’s a simple story but delivered in a typically imaginative and slightly abstract way - the turn of phrase will also be familiar to his fans. Oh and train guy kind of makes an appearance!

Brilliant - Thoroughly enjoyed!
Loved it! If you like Bob Mortimer you will enjoy this book. Made me laugh out loud numerous times. With Bob narrating it made it more enjoyable and funny, it wouldn't have been the same if someone else read it. I can't wait for his next book!

superb stuff
One of the best audiobooks I've listened to. the effortless reading style and story were a real treat. It was just good fun to be taken on a trip into the imagination of Bob Mortimer and the inventiveness of the language, turns of phrase and characterisation that shines through in Mortimer and Phillips' reading were superb. Top marks for this!
