Summary

A North of Ireland woman learns through her child's tragedy how to face her prejudices while on a holiday in Turkey. Shortlisted for the Willesden Prize, Jolt is a story about perception and ingrained prejudices that we can carry around with us in our everyday lives. Sometimes it can take a journey to a strange place to waken us into a less intransigent way of seeing the world.

A tale about loss and racism

It's a well written story that blends rich characters against the backdrop of a foreign country.

An ok short tale

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

The Book

The story was an fairly interesting short about a relationship between an Irish couple who lost a daughter and their relationship has changed due to this. They go on a holiday to Turkey and experience prejudices and other ingrained beliefs about the people there and find out some things about themselves and them as a couple along the way.

The Production

The narration was clearly read but this was almost too much at times with very clipped speech making it seem overly formal and almost a staccato rhythm in places. The narration isn't always like this and sometimes it flows quite normally but when it does go like this it is a bit off putting. The character voices by contrast were good.
