About this listen
In the #1 New York Times bestseller Mindhunter, John Douglas, who headed the FBI's elite Investigative Support Unit, told the story of his brilliant and terrifying career tracking down some of the most heinous criminals in history. Now, in Journey into Darkness, Douglas profiles vicious serial killers, rapists, and child molesters. He is straightforward, blunt, often irreverent, and outspoken, but takes pains not to glorify any of these murderers. Some of the unique cases Douglas discusses include:
-The Clairemont killer
-The schoolgirl murders
-Richmond's First Serial Murderer
-The brutal and sadistic murder of Suzanne Marie Collins
-Polly Klaas' abduction and murder by Richard Allen Davis,
-The tragedy that lead to the creation of Megan's Law
With Journey into Darkness, Douglas provides more than a glimpse into the minds of serial killers; he demonstrates what a powerful weapon behavioral science has become. Profiling criminals helps not only to capture them, but also helps society understand how these predators work and what can be done to prevent them from striking again. Douglas focuses especially on pedophiles and child abductors, fully explaining what drives them, and how to keep children away from them. As he points out, "The best way to protect your children is to know your enemy." He includes eight rules for safety, a list of steps parents can take to prevent child abduction and exploitation, tips on how to detect sexual exploitation, basic rules of safety for children, and a chart, based on age, which details the safety skills children should have to protect themselves.
In his review for Mindhunter in The New York Times Book Review, Dean Koontz said, "Because of his insights and the power of the material, he leaves us shaken, gripped by a quiet grief for the innocent victims and anguished by the human condition." Journey into Darkness continues this perilous trip into the psyche of the serial killer, but also offers a glimmer of hope that profiling may enable law enforcement to see the indicators of a serial killer's mind and intervene before he kills, or kills again.©2012 John E. A bit preachy
Not as well written, or performed as "The Killer Across The Table", nor as good as "Mindhunter".

kind of dragged on a bit at the end
with JD pontificating on the death penalty it became a bit tiresome. I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the book though it was a tough listen at times

Yet another engaging book from this amazing author
Having read two other books from the same author, this did not disappoint! Douglas is entrancing with his experience and knowledge within this field. Only thing that let it down slightly was the narrator, could not take to him at all.

Strong stomach required
After reading other reviews I expected to be put off by the narrator but really liked him. He sounded like an older gentleman, which is in keeping with the author. This is an odd book, part crime story, part advice on keeping children safe, part musing on crime and punishment. The first few minutes are gruesome and I nearly returned it because of that. Later on I skipped some of he more horrible details. However, a fascinating book.

Great book, Off-putting narration
The content of this book is great, it’s certainly a tough read but it’s interesting and insightful. What I really struggled with was the narration, to me, it’s just jarring. Because of that, I recommend listening to The Killer Across the Table, and reading this book instead.

Excellent quality, excellent value!
A really good book without being gratuitous. I learned a lot from it, especially how to keep myself safe.
Its also great for parents and carers on how to keep your children safe. I would highly recommend it.

Great book aprt from 2 chapters
I am a big fan of this author and have nothing but total respect for what he has achieved. This book however wanders way off script first a lecture on how to raise children then in the following chapter a long monologue of minor detail on the raising of 2 adopted children made it the reading very tedious.
