About this listen

Time travel meets history in this new drama adaptation by Marty Ross.

'So tell me, Dr Maxwell, if the whole of history lay before you...where would you go? What would you like to witness?'

When Max, a recent ancient history graduate, is offered a mysterious job at St Mary's Historical Research Institute, she quickly comes to realise this isn't any old stuffy research library. At St Mary's the historians don't just study the past - they revisit it.

What begins as an academic exploration of events, such as the Peterloo Massacre, takes a dark and dangerous turn, and the historians of St Mary's soon learn that it's not just history they're fighting....

Follow the tea-soaked disaster magnets of St Mary's as they rattle around history. Because wherever these historians go, chaos is sure to follow.

Starring Gemma Whelan (SAG nominated, Game of Thrones, Gulliver's Travels), Ben Miles (SAG nominated, The Crown, V for Vendetta), Jonathan Bailey (Broadchurch, Leonardo, The Mercy) and Zara Ramm (narrator of the original Chronicles of St Mary's audiobooks), this Audible Original production will transport you to iconic moments throughout history, from the Cretaceous period to the destruction of the Great Library at Alexandria.

One damned thong after another:Audio drama

I have all of the chronicals, novels and short stories and I listen to them over and over, and I have wished hard for a tv series or film. Then, lo and behold! an audio play. There is none of the struggle that comes from thinking that I would not have cast one or other actor in any particular part, here, because you don't see them and so your imagination isn't dissappointed, which is a problem for me if I have followef a series of books. Obviously the play is not in the exact form of the book but the story is all there. I. LOVED. IT ! I bought it yesterday and have already
istened to it twice. l may even listen to it again today because, quite frankly, it is better than the telly. Please make more!

Really good listen

A enjoyable story with an interesting twist. Also makes you think about how we affect history everyday.

Very Professional and Enjoyable

The plot itself was one that I enjoyed a lot but it was the performance from the voice actors that really made it. The chef especially had a lovely voice. I hope that they adapt the second book with the same cast.

Overall Good

I've heard all of this series previously, including all of the short stories and it was great to see one come to life. It's a fabulous story and the production is good. However, for me, Chief Farrell is ruined by the actor (Ben Miles I think). His whole performance is cringeworthy and he turns the character into a completely different person than from the audio books. He sounds ancient and there's no way Max would look twice at him. It would stop me listening to another...

Amaaaazing - really worth a listen.

I read the book. But this production really brought it to life. Some great acting. Brilliant sound effects. Loved listening to this. Highly recommended. And Chief Farrell has a very sexy voice. Even Ronan - who we’re supposed to hate - had a sexy voice.
Slight criticism is sometimes there was too much silence between scenes. A couple of times I thought my app had stopped running.

Just brilliant!!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this and really wished the whole lot were done this way.
I really struggled with the full version, both book and audio version.
I really really wanted to like books, as they have so many good reviews, I love time travel and I do love a long running series, so it SHOULD have been just my sort of thing, I kept trying....
But I didn't like it..

Until this version!!!!
This version I Loved and would love to listen to the rest of St Marys like this one.

A bit too much grunting and heavy breathing

Absolutely love the St. Mary‘s audio books and was quite excited when I read the reviews for this. It’s definitely a fun listen but just a bit too much grunting, weeping and heavy breathing for my tastes. A lot of the subtleties of the original story also get lost because you don’t get any insight on Max‘s thinking.

If you like the original books it’s well worth a listen, if you‘re new to St. Mary‘s steer clear.

over the top feminist

the settings and performance are great. the story is just over the top feminist. All men are guilty, idiots, egoistic or villains. All the women on the other hand are flawless, clever. Shame, could have been great

This book grows on you!

I didn’t know what to expect and the beginning was slow to get going. Then I started liking the female protagonist Max and things got more interesting.
