About this listen

Captain William Hawksmoor of the Royal Navy never expected to inherit Kingscastle and is none too pleased when he does so. Especially when he learns that he must marry within a year or be forever dealing with trustees.

As the new marquis of Athelney, the captain takes command of Kingscastle and discovers much to be done to set it in order. He must also contend with his aunt Lady Willoughby Hawksmoor, who is determined that her daughter will be his wife. When she discovers he is far more interested in Eleanor Burgess, her underpaid and much put-upon companion, Lady Willoughby shows she will stop at nothing to keep them apart.

Victorian romance

Great and very promising start but it gradually drifted into mediocre romance. Not for me.

Pretty much what I expected

Amusing romance, very predictable, very well narrated, provided a light listen when I wasn’t up for anything that required more thought

Most likely wouldn’t listen again, but don’t regret the credit

Funny and enjoyable but... unnecessary misunderstandings

I enjoyed reading this book and the narrator did such a fantastic job. It's rare to hear a male narrator for a romance novel. The intonation and character acting was perfect. On the writing, the book is way funnier than I thought. Characters are also well developed. I loved to see the growth in Charlotte.

Lastly, the only reason I give the story an overall 4 is the author's obvious use of misunderstandings as a way to lengthen the plot. I'm so tired of this in the romance genre. It makes characters behave uncharacteristically irrational and foolish because there's no other real drama going on. Then there was the second couple - cute but we spent a lot or time developing their romance while the main one took til the very last chapter to come to fruition.

Great performance of an engaging by story

Well written and humorous story which slightly labours the romance at its heart but which is enjoyable and full of interesting detail about the characters, their lives and surroundings. Matt Addis adds value to any book he narrates.

Well paced & beautifully narrated story

This was my second audiobook by Sophia Holloway, narrated by Matt Addis. I have really enjoyed these regency stories. Matt Addis brings the characters alive with his narration.

Outstanding

This one took a bit more warming up to than previous books but the characters were fabulous - I loved the nautical patois and character development, just a really lovely story.

Great narrator dull story

Beautifully read by Matt Addis, painstakingly written but not for lovers of Georgette Heyer’s wit, lightness of touch, and fast paced action

Outstanding Book

Such a depth if story brilliantly narrated. I did not want it to finish. On to the next book by Sophia Holloway. I regret I am coming to the end of her books.

Simple but pleasant

A nice pleasant listen again from the author. Felt this one was a little more humorous than others, with a quite predictable end which is fine. Happy to listen to anything Matt Addis narrates, such a talented individual. Lewis
