No individual accented characters makes this a lot harder to listen to than many audio books, the tempo is also all over the place. Excellent story I just wish it was read with more flavour as I’m sure the writer intended it to be.

Shadow hunters exist in the modern world along side vampires, werewolves, mages and fae. They must live by strict and sometimes unfair seeming rules.
The story focuses on 2 teens living in this world, thier friendship and love for thier family and the battles they have to protect it. it includes all the teen angst you ould expect from that and more.

I am a more mature listener and enjoy fantasy as a break from heavier reading. This is obviously a young adults book but still quite fun. The advantage of the younger style fantasy is that you don't get all the flowery pulsing porno that is ubiquitous in adult fantasy which I find tedious. Good story with interesting characters.

Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments and Infernal Devices series were both excellent. I didn't find this first installment of The Dark Artifices nearly as captivating. I don't really like Emma as a character and I didn't find any of the others engaging enough to compensate for that loss. Plus, the plot was too predictable for me. It is still worth listening to, but I doubt I would have continued with the series if I didn't have Clare's other works to build up my faith that the story will get better.

At the outset I should state that I do n it believe that I am part of the target audience for this book - too old as I'm in my mid-fifties. Sorry to say I did not really enjoy this book. I felt it to be too long, some narrative tracks far too drawn out and that it suffered a number of plot holes.
