About this listen

"So I thought I might take up paragliding. You know, buy one on eBay and just jump off the cliff one morning."

Emily Willows is middle-aged, widowed, wealthy, and bored. When she makes those flippant remarks to her son over coffee one Friday, she has no inkling that within a few hours she will be facing the most terrifying situation of her life. Nor could she have guessed that she will be confronting it with the enigmatic young woman who moved in next door a few months ago and who has hardly spoken a word to her since. And neither of them has realized yet that after this meeting, their lives will never be the same again.

The story, as with all his books, is well thought out and lightly written. While it might be a little far-fetched, surely the point of fiction is to take readers away from themselves.

The book is set in the West Country - lively and unusual, during a current trend for gritty and dark urban-based mysteries. The author finds opportunities to present the landscape in appealing and ways that create dissonance that supports his storyline. However, all his work is let down when the narrator is not up to the job.

I listen to audiobooks. A lot. They are vital for those of us no longer able to read a physical book. By the same token, choice of narration makes the difference between enjoyment and escapism and frustration and abandonment, whatever the book’s quality.

This performance meant I had to use the facility to slow down narration from the default 1.0; a first for me. The narrator read the book almost as though she didn’t understand the English language, with sentence breaks at odd, unnatural points and emphasis in random places. She was also TERRIBLE at accents - in fact, she seems to have only two. Her usual speaking is fine, but whenever the text gave direction such as ‘he said in a Dorset burr’, or ‘gentle Glaswegian’, listeners are treated to the same, harsh, grating Yorkshire. Why employ a narrator who is not able to deliver what’s described? Incredibly disappointing and did not encourage me to continue with the series.

Thoughtful, intelligent writing let down

This was so much fun. Utterly unexpected and compulsive. Two "tough old birds" against the
world. More please!

I've listened to all the DC Smith books and am part way through listening to the Kings Lake series. I love Peter Grainger's books and Gildart Jackson's narration is sublime.
This story is, up to now, OK, but I cannot finish it as the narrator must be one of the worst I've ever listened to. She rushes and it takes an effort to keep up; her accents are abysmal especially Devonshire accents; she is not able to carry off a male voice; she puts very little expression into her voice.
Thankfully, this book is part of the plus library so I haven't lost money buying it, but I won't be listening to this series unless a different narrator records it. I shall probably read the kindle versions as the storyline seems to be cosy crime which I sometimes read. I will most certainly not buy any books narrated by Henrietta Meire.

Awful narration

I’ve loved this author’s previous books, and they are narrated brilliantly. The narrator chosen for this book, and who I believe does the entire series, isn’t brilliant. Despite being set in the West Country, there wasn’t a single local accent - all were generic northern accents. Even characters described as posh got the same generic thick, northern accent. That was bad enough, but when she tried to do a Scottish accent, it became toe curling. I realise how difficult it must be to choose the right narrator; they can make or break an audiobook. However, surely the first requirement should be can they actually do the accents required?

Terrible narration

I have to be honest, I couldn’t get through this book, not because of the writing, but the narrator’s monosyllabic voice and tone drove me crazy. I went through 5 chapters and couldn’t register a single word in my brain. And the speed she narrated, like she has somewhat else to be.
I like Peter Grainger’s writing and a fan of his other series, but imo, the narrator really let him down on this.

Just can’t get into it

Loved the story, characters and narrator. Luckily it was a freebie as at only 5+hours, it would be a little expensive!

Short but sweet

the story was interesting enough, slow to start and the characters were likeable, if lacking any real substance.
A decent book overall, though it would not be worthy of a reread.

light, easy listening/reading

Love Peter Grainger’s books. I think I have been spoilt by the wonderful narrator G.Jackson who in theKing’s Lake and DS Smith series superbly brought Grainger’s characters to life.
The narrator of this book was a very poor choice indeed. I won’t be listening to the rest of the series which is a real shame.

Great story poor narration
