Detective Sergeant Chris Waters got the call at 05.29 that July morning. This is it, said DCI Reeve, you'll be first there, it's all yours, you're the crime scene manager. Suddenly, after months of waiting and wondering, Waters finds himself in at the deep end, and alone at the scene of a puzzling murder.
As the investigation proceeds, the detectives at Kings Lake Central find themselves visiting familiar places and talking to some familiar faces, while old enmities reappear in the incident room. Before this is over, Chris Waters will need to make a career-changing decision, and another member of the CID team will find herself facing an unexpected challenge. And Smith? Gone but not forgotten? Surely, he would say, you cannot write me off with a worn-out cliche like that....

Loved it
I was so excited when I found out the series was continuing post-smith and the book didn’t disappoint. Loved the fact that DC is still such a major part of the team’s investigation processes and always there in the background!
Also really enjoyed this storyline, very clever way of linking the past with present having the caravan park be the main site.

I liked the characters and the obvious knowledge of police procedures at all stages of the investigation

Too Many Females
I think most of us loved the gentle, but masterful character of D.C. Smith, but this story had too many females, and personally I am tired of our matriarchal society.
Once I got past the first two thirds and then dialogues concentrated on police business, rather than romance, I went back to enjoying it as much as the D.C. Smith series.

Perfectly written and presented.
At first I was wondering if I could sit through what was the longest audio file I had listened to but honestly apart from being written so well with so many twists and turns the narrator had you in the palm of his hands and carried you through seamlessly.
Highly recommended.

A cracking good read!
My first read of a Peter Grainger book, thoroughly enjoyed it and about to start on the second. Great narration, except for his annoying habit of prounouncing plastic plarstic!

The fact that country policing in a rural setting could have such a brilliant plot with many clever twists and turns. Loved it
Loved the characters, was glad I had read the previous book and learned what had happened to DC. Liked the quiet understated character of the detective Sargent, and the good treatment of Oliver. Down’s syndrome is not a mental illness glad this book highlights that fact

Narrator brilliant
Guessed the end too early but the methodology of how the investigators and police force got there in the end was good and detailed. To be honest the end was very obvious as soon as Oliver and where his DNA was found. I called it to my family immediately- but the narration was great x

Excellent!
Thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. Narration is excellent. I will be looking out for other books by this author - and narrator. A great combination.

A slow burn that let’s you think
This is the second book by Peter Grainger that I’ve listened to & I’m getting used to the slow build up and unravelling of both the police and personal storylines. Songbird involves some topical issues about modern policing, old school attitudes, Down’s Syndrome and strong female characters.
