Summary

The end is coming.

Logen Ninefingers might only have one more fight in him, but it’s going to be a big one. Battle rages across the North, the King of the Northmen still stands firm and there’s only one man who can top him. His oldest friend and his oldest enemy. It’s time for the Bloody-Nine to come home.

With too many masters and too little time, Superior Glokta is fighting a different kind of war - a secret struggle in which no-one is safe and no-one can be trusted. His days with a sword are far behind him. It’s a good thing blackmail, threats, and torture still work well enough.

Jezal dan Luthar has decided that winning glory is too painful, and turned his back on soldiering for a life with the woman he loves. But love can be painful too, and glory has a nasty habit of creeping up on someone.

While the King of the Union lies on his death bed, the peasants revolt and the nobles scramble to steal his crown. No-one believes that the shadow of war is falling across the very heart of the Union. The First of the Magi has a plan to save the world. But there are risks. There is no risk more terrible, after all, than to break the First Law.

Musings on the nature of good men

And violence a plenty. No pat excuses for any of the characters in this book. Every single one of them is appalling or corrupted or weak. There are a couple of good jokes too.

Amazing an ending to rival The Empire Strikes Back

I've seen the First Law book on shelves at book stores in the UK for well over a decade but always failed to give it a go despite me being a fan of fantasy. I can say in all truth that Joe Ambercrombie is a titan of contemporary fantasy writing who stand at the same level as authors such as Patrick Rothfuss and Scott Lynch. The twists and turns of this final book, characters who you admired and thought to be heroes are perhaps not so much, vivid battle story lines and fights and intrigue are written with great skill and presented in an exciting way by the narrator. I've bought the subsequent standalone books set in the same universe and although not direct sequels to this excellent trilogy I read that certain characters from The First Law are mentioned and/or appear in them. So when I post this I will start with Best Served Cold.

Excellent!

Would you consider the audio edition of Last Argument of Kings to be better than the print version?

The narrator Steven Pacey brings the book to life, excellent narrator of the many characters makes listening to this story a real pleasure.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Lots of great characters but Sandan Glokta has to be a favourite. His dark twisted humour which is largely directed towards himself is priceless, as are his thoughts on other people and objects. He's one of the most unforgettable characters in the book...wicked and brilliant!

What about Steven Pacey’s performance did you like?

His narration is spot on and the different voices he uses for each character helps to shape their image in your mind. One of the best narrators I've listened to so far.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened to it whenever I could, car, in bed, at the gym... so yes, I couldn't get enough of the story and began the next in the series immediately the first ended.

Any additional comments?

I've never really been 'into' fantasy' books, however, this caught my eye and I'm so pleased it did - the whole saga is well written and perfectly narrated. A must buy... it would make a fantastic movie :)

superb

Brilliant storytelling yet again from Joe Abercrombie.
A world full of bastard's and men wanting to be better. Steven Pacey's narrative gifts the listener with a visual, emotional and tactile image of a world filled with believable characters and places.
Another knockout performance by Steven Pacey.

Great conclusion

Would you listen to Last Argument of Kings again? Why?

Great listen. Narrator is excellent and will certainly get the other books by Joe Abercombie and look out for other books narrated by Steven Pacey

Who was your favorite character and why?

Gloka and nine fingers are great characters. They are complex and at the especially with Glokta extremely funny

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The narrator is excellent and his voices for the characters really lends itself to the book.

Any additional comments?

Great listen and was one the quickest audio books I have listened to. Say one thing about the first law series. Says its a great adventure.
