Summary
The next explosive stand-alone thriller from Sunday Times best-selling author Stephen Leather, featuring appearances from Dan 'Spider' Shepherd.
Friendships forged in the heat of combat can be stronger than anything.
So when SAS trooper Matt Standing is told that the former Navy SEAL who saved his life is in trouble, he doesn't hesitate to go to his aid - even if that means flying halfway around the world to Los Angeles.
Navy SEAL-turned-bodyguard Bobby-Ray Barnes has been accused of killing the man he was supposed to be protecting. Three other bodyguards were also killed, and now Bobby-Ray is on the run.
The dead client was a Russian oligarch with connections to the Kremlin. But who wanted him dead? And if Bobby-Ray wasn't the killer, who carried out the assassination, and why is Bobby-Ray being framed? Standing is the only man who can answer those questions - providing he can stay alive long enough.
Critic reviews
"The sheer impetus of his story-telling is damned hard to resist." (Sunday Express)
"A master of the thriller genre." (Irish Times)
"As tough as British thriller writers get." (Irish Independent)

Another great story
I really enjoy the Stephen Leather books, and this is no exception. A cracking storyline with plenty of action. Nice to have Spider Shepherd included in the story. It’s a great way to see how he’s doing while not being the main character. Standing is a believable character and look forward to what comes next for him. Keep them coming please!

Absolutely brilliant.
Yet another great dramatic tale narrated by The Excellent Paul Thornley! A superb storey by Stephen Leather, only 2 points in the story I could surmise what was going to happen, other than that each chapter was full on twists and turns, bought to life by Paul Thorney. One tiny criticism is, we didn't have to know exactly what pistol or rifle or MG that each person was carrying or using, it would have only been on interest to ex service men and women such as myself. I think that was a little bit of overkill but other than that it was absolutely excellent listen.
1 night at about 11:45 t thought I'd give it 45 mins on the timer, the timer cut off at a really crucial part in the plot, so hit the timer for 30 mins and again and again... I looked over at my clock..4:10am! and yes i was late for work but couldnt put it away. to use an old cliche it's a real page turner.

Stephen Leather writes a great story and this one is right up there with his best. Paul Thornley really brings it alive. Brilliant.

Engaging
Oh this was really good. I enjoyed that Standing wasn’t a professional as in knowing what to do at all times but more so feeling his way around. Really good

It was the overall story line that did it for me.
Not a lot to dislike about this audible story……if anything. Mr Leather has that uncanny ability to weave modern day difficult political topics into a believable a story line together with highlighting some moral dilemmas.

I hope this is the first book of a new series
Mat Standing first appeared in the Spider Shepherd series. He made an impression on me then, and almost came across as a Terminator type of character. I downloaded this book when it came out, but kept putting off pressing the play button. When I eventually started listening, I was pleasantly surprised. The story is strong and there are no dull spots. The characters are also strong. One of the best audio books I have listened to in a while.
Appearances from Dan Shepherd and Richard Yokely really tie the plot together.
I just hope Stephan Leather decides to do some more Mat Standing books.
