About this listen

The first Thora Gudmundsdottir novel from Yrsa Sigurdardottir—'Queen of Icelandic crime'.

A young man is found brutally murdered, his eyes gouged out. A student of Icelandic history in Reykjavik, he came from a wealthy German family who do not share the police's belief that his drug dealer murdered him. Attorney Thora Gudmundsdottir is commissioned by his mother to find out the truth, with the help—and hindrance—of boorish ex-policeman Matthew Reich. Their investigations into his research take them deep into a grisly world of torture and witchcraft both past and present, as they draw ever closer to a killer gripped by a dangerous obsession....

Couldn’t stick with it…poorly written

Two dimensional characters. Hard going as irrelevant detail took up too much of the listening time.

Overjoyed at the discovery of this author!

I recently enjoyed THE PRAY and decided to try a second Sigurdardottir novel. I’m loving that moment of having just discovered a phenomenal new writer because LAST RITUALS was exceptional. A brilliant first in a series. I can’t wait to continue!

An outstanding icelandic tale

Love scandi noir as a genre and watch/read/listen to all I can get my ears and eyes on. Have also toured Iceland ~ what a country! Yrsa Sigurdadottir nails it for me. Balance the of story/atmosphere is perfect. Good translation & narrator pronounces icelandic well, with enthusiasm & great characterisation. Big thumbs up and looking forward to more

Far fetched

Glad I came across later Yrsa Sigurdadottir’s later works first. This one I’m afraid is decidedly average.

Yawn!!

This book was recommended to me and it started really well but unfortunately about halfway through the story it all sort of fizzled out and I found it a struggle to get through to the end. The plot about historic Icelandic witchcraft should have been a real page turner but there were too many long winded explanations which made me bored. I can't say I liked any of the characters, and I could definitely have done without the romance! I was looking forward to reading something different to my usual UK crime fiction, but to be honest, this book could have been set absolutely anywhere as there were no descriptions of the landscapes.

I did enjoy the narration by Gabrielle Nellis-Pain.
