About this listen

It is 1879, and the young Detective Sergeant Sholto Lestrade has his work cut out for him as he investigates mysterious goings-on at "Lord" George Sanger's Circus. First, the best juggler in Europe is shot in full view of a thousand people. Then Huge Hughie the dwarf dies an agonising death whilst performing the Ether Trick. Finally, the Great Bolus dies by swallowing the wrong sword. And all of this comes after two bodies are found with multiple slashes...

As a trail of murder is laid amongst the llama droppings, the world's second greatest detective goes undercover to solve the mystery.

Murders absurd

Full of unashamedly bad puns, cultural allusions, often in very bad taste, it's a bit like "I'm sorry, I haven't a clue" with corpses. Don't expect historical accuracy or great literature, but it's entertaining, fast moving, and very, very silly....

Lestrade Setting out

Chronologically the first book in the series, Lestrade finding his feet, occasionally stepping in something. I enjoy the frequent references to classic songs, expressions & sayings. Not too heavy but a good listen.

Good story problem narration

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Thi story has good pace, great characters, lots of plot twists and a good measure of humour to keep the reader reading. But, it is read by the author and this lets it down. It sounds as though he is reading with a mouthful of drink which is very distracting from what is a very worthwhile and entertaining audio book.

What could M J Trow have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I first read this series of books about 15 yrs ago they definitely stand up to a second visit. I wish they had a different reader

Would you listen to another book narrated by M J Trow?

Yes with another narrator

Could you see Lestrade and the Sawdust Ring being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

Definitely

good story

Any additional comments?

at the beginning of the story I thought I had made a big mistake in buying this book but as soon as sergeant lestrade came on the scene and then joined the circus it became good.
I had no problems with m.j. trow's performance of the book. he did the accents well bringing the book to life. not many author's can perform their own books.

Too Silly

I like Holmes pastiche stories generally, and had great hopes of this series. However I found this just too silly, no sort of storyline, and the constant regional accents were overdone. Stopped when I couldn't bear it any longer.
