About this listen
"He was like if water caught fire—a beautiful anomaly. It was gorgeous. Danny wanted to exist inside that explosion and let himself be consumed by it."
There are certain kinds of people who were meant to become rich, but Danny Zhou isn’t one of them. He’s a simple man with simple tastes. In life, he’s only ever wanted a few things:
A house.
Maybe a dog.
He wouldn’t say no to a white picket fence.
And a gorgeous husband wouldn’t hurt.
But the sudden explosion of his delivery app changed his life, and not for the good.
Returning home with a shattered heart and a full bank account, Danny starts the search for a life with substance, and takes up his old post as a volunteer firefighter. He’s not sure what to expect, but it’s most definitely not Jamie Kane, the gorgeous, Deaf firefighter with a chip on his shoulder the size of Texas, and seems to hate the very sight of him.
Danny knows he shouldn’t look at that man and see a future there. Men like Jamie are not men for happily ever afters. But something in his dark eyes says to keep trying. Something in his strong, careful hands says Jamie is definitely worth the fire, even if Danny gets burned.
Like Water Catching Fire is a second-edition rerelease of a book published in 2018 with small but significant changes. It's a slow-burn, stand-alone firefighter romance featuring a stoic, Deaf Polynesian man who isn’t thrilled about living on the mainland, and a shy Chinese American tech nerd whose viral delivery app changed everything for the worse…and then maybe for the better.

The angst in the book is not very intense, but gives it a lot of depth and I like that E.M. Lindsey does not sugarcoat issues they input into the story. It's a genuine, believable and emotional romance that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Narration: Good, easy to follow narration. Very good performance just at the level I would expect from Michael Dean.
Emotional and awesome

Though this audio started off very much about Danny and his personal journey, by the time I reached the end I felt equally invested in the resolution of Jamie's storyline. These men were so different from each other, and yet linked by their shared experience of feeling like an outsider in their community. For Danny, coming back to his home town was a means of escaping from his New York lifestyle and trying to find himself again. I don't think he ever anticipated how meeting Jamie would change his life, but that's exactly what happened when they locked eyes in the fire station. It broke my heart a little to see how little faith Jamie had that Danny could be different from the other guys on the team, but after a particularly awful call broke down their communication barrier, I saw an entirely different side of him. Once Jamie let himself open up to Danny, their relationship blossomed into a wonderfully sweet romance. I loved listening to every minute of their low-key dates and casual conversations, and it made me excited to see how deep their feelings grew. While I wouldn't say their story was angst-free, most of the tension was external to Danny and Jamie's relationship. These two had to deal with disapproving friends, confrontations with exes, and stressful family interactions, but never once did they fight with each other or walk away. Their conflicts didn't get perfectly resolved, because life is never that simple, but the way they stood together throughout it all reinforced how deep their feelings were for each other. While I know the future has a lot more in store for Danny and Jamie, I'm perfectly content to walk away knowing that Jamie is in a better place with his family than he has been for years, that Danny found a new passion to make him excited to go to work every day, and that their relationship is only going to grow stronger over time.
