About this listen

AD 260 - Betrayed by his most trusted adviser, the Roman Emperor Valerian has been captured by the Sassanid barbarians. Ballista looks on helplessly, but vows to avenge those who have brought the empire to the brink of destruction with their treachery. First he must decide what price he will pay for his own freedom. Only the fearless and those whom the gods will spare from hell can now save the empire from a catastrophic ending. Ballista, the Warrior of Rome, faces his greatest challenge yet.

I'll be a little biased here, anything with Romans, gladius or testudos in I love! This is the third in the series and I have just fallen in love with the main characters, and honestly this is my second time of listening to this series!

Sucker for ancient history!

This is the third book in the Warrior of Rome series and once again Sidebottom has written a rip roaring epic that matches the standards set in the first two novels. Nick Boulton's narration and characterisation sets him apart as a leader in this field. I cannot wait to download the next instalment to find out what Balista and his band of brothers have been up to.

Sidebottom excels once again

I thought it would be interesting to hear a novel about an unfashionable period of Roman history - and it was. However, the narration is constantly interspersed with words and phrases in the original Latin, with few translations! After stopping the story to carry out my own translations I got very frustrated. I wanted a novel not a reference book. So I will not be joining Ballista in any further adventures.

Who is the author trying to impress?
