Summary
Jerry White's London in the Eighteenth Century is an unrivalled, panoramic account of the city's dramatic century of rebirth by its leading expert.
London in the eighteenth century had risen from the ashes. The city and its people had been brought to the brink by the Great Fire of 1666. But the century that followed was a period of vigorous expansion, of scientific and artistic genius, of blossoming reason, civility, elegance and manners. It was also an age of extremes: of starving poverty and exquisite fashion, of joy and despair, of sentiment and cruelty.
In Jerry White’s acclaimed history of London’s magnificent and boisterous rebirth we witness the astonishing drama of daily life in the midst of this burgeoning city.

Excellent, well researched and fascinating history
Loved this book. The narrative is eloquently written and the various aspects of London’s history in this period are covered in great detail, in a well structured way. The narration is superb too. Highly recommend!

A text book exposition
I am glad I stuck at it. The text at times was turgid but the story very interesting.
I have decided to do the next century but might delay the task whilst I recover my resolve ,
This text would have been housed in my bookcase in previous years, but vision issues prevent that, Shame.

seriously researched (largely social) history of 18th C London, but 'y' = 'th'!
well-researched and by and large well-read account of 18th century London. one really irritating failing however: for some bizarre reason the producer has invited the narrator to pronounce 'ye' (meaning 'the') using the y-sound found in 'you' as opposed to the correct pronunciation 'th'. what appears to be a 'y' was simply a typographic substitute for the old English character 'thorn' - pronounced 'th.. I am sure Mr White knows this: was he given no editorial oversight of the final product? This is a shame because it makes the text sound, at times, tacky and amateurish

Interesting but not interesting enough
There were many interesting parts. Yet, for some reason I was unable to stay tuned in, my mind drifted a lot whilst listening. I think it was more because it most of it was recited in a fairly monotone.

Let down by poor narration
I gave up listening when I had heard one too many words mispronounced. Why didn't anyone correct the narrator?

Pronunciations
I really, REALLY wish someone had gone through this and corrected some of the pronunciations. Some of them, including ‘Holburn’, are inexcusable for anyone who’s even just visited London 🙄

Detailed and interesting
Having listened to the 19th Century book previously and enjoying it I was thrilled to see this come up. Once again a vivid and detailed book about the city. The main characters, the trends and the fashions. All subjects are covered well. Very well read indeed. On to the 20th century now!

awful narrated "voices" throughout
hard to focus on the content due to the narration. There's a lot of contemporary quotes but the narrator really cannot do "voices." It would have been better had he simply read the quotes but as it is, the attempt at a different voice for each quote is so painful I was left constantly anticipating the next awful voice instead of listening to the content.

Excellent
Very detailed history well brought to life by the narrator. Perhaps a little pompously phrased now and then, but still fascinating and well researched.
