About this listen

Jerry White's London in the Nineteenth Century is the richest and most absorbing account of the city's greatest century by its leading expert.

London in the nineteenth century was the greatest city mankind had ever seen. Its growth was stupendous. Its wealth was dazzling. Its horrors shocked the world. This was the London of Blake, Thackeray and Mayhew, of Nash, Faraday and Disraeli. Most of all it was the London of Dickens. As William Blake put it, London was 'a Human awful wonder of God'.

In Jerry White's dazzling history we witness the city's unparalleled metamorphosis over the course of the century through the daily lives of its inhabitants. We see how Londoners worked, played and adapted to the demands of the metropolis during this century of dizzying change. The result is a panorama teeming with life.

A thoroughly researched, well written and presented history of C19 London.

My only bug-bear is the chapter list (contents) screen. It just gives a list of the chapter numbers and the chapter titles are missing.

Comprehensive History

This is a fantastic book. It's nicely structured and in-depth enough without going too far down one aspect of London life. Really well read and nicely paced. Really enjoyed it. I would love the 20th century London book to be released on here too! Highly rated for anyone interested in history or indeed, the amazing varied city of London. First class.

This is a comprehensive history of London throughout the whole of the 19th century. It’s breathtaking expansion is detailed along with all of the concomitant social aspects. Work, social life, subsistence, entertainment, vice, religion, social unrest are all dealt with in considerable detail.
There are plenty of facts and figures, but the author never lets these weigh down the absorbing narrative. Whether or not you are a Londoner, or have ever lived in London, this is a hugely absorbing, entertaining and enlightening read.

19th Century London from just about every aspect.

A great history, read wonderfully well. The growth of London in the 19th century represented the birth of the modern nation and the beginning of civility. The bold ambition, architectural triumph and changes in housing, infrastructure, transport, education, medicine, policing and the rest in the last 30 years were staggering.

That poverty remained at the end of the century was a blight but does not deny the great distance traveled. And, lest we forget, the great advances were achieved and paid for by capitalism and individual enterprise, and not by woke snowflakery with social science degrees.

Outstanding, fascinating

It takes some resolve to finish this history but having achieved it I am grateful for the author’s efforts. More a reference book than an exciting read, but some very absorbing bits hidden in the text. Follows neatly on from London in the 18th Century.

Full of nuggets

If you do not enjoy history books where the author has at least the decency of pretending to be impartial, this is not the book for you. His political and religious (anti-religious) views are all over the place.

Meh, very opinionated

It is a thoroughly researched work, covering every aspect of London in the 19th century.
Though it is full of data and often statistics, it doesn't sound dry at all, which is quite an
achievement.

Very interesting and informative.

I found this book insightful and intersting. It really was a 100 years crammed into one book. Every bit of 19th Century London is in here - I really enjoyed it.
