Summary
The launch of a major new detective series from the publishers of Henning Mankell, Jo Nesbo and Fred Vargas.
A man is burnt alive in a suburban garden shed. DI Zigic and DS Ferreira are called in from the Peterborough Hate Crimes Unit to investigate the murder. Their victim is quickly identified as a migrant worker and a man several people might have had good reason to see dead.
A convicted arsonist and member of a far-right movement has just been released from prison, while witnesses claim to have seen the dead man fighting with one of the town’s most prominent slum landlords. Zigic and Ferreira know all too well the problems that come with dealing with a community that has more reason than most not to trust the police, but when another migrant worker is attacked, tensions rapidly begin to rise as they search for their killer.

Dark and depressing but good
A long way from Midsomer Murder ..... No cosy murders (if there ever is). This is a dark and interesting and a rather depressing story of today.

Good gritty cop drama
I’ve read one of these and now enjoyed the audible performance too. Good gritty police drama with intricate story lines. The Peterborough tourist board must be delighted with these though!!

Dull as Ditchwater
Just goes to show you should not believe the hype.
This book is dull, formulaic & deeply derivative. It has nothing new for the reader or listener and takes an awfully long time to reach a predictable conclusion.
Given there are other far superior authors out there with fresh offerings like Zoe Ferraris & Barbara Nadel for instance - I don't know why Audible bothered with this bland offering.
Don't waste your money.

Not a lot of interest in this one
I chose this as it has had good reviews on Amazon. It seemed interesting to combine crime, immigration and the Baltic States. The story did not seem to flow very well, with the characters quite stereotypical. They appeared to think and act as expected with no surprise. I did not enjoy the writing style or felt that the mystery was good. The description of Peterborough was detailed. I have never been there so I do not know how accurate this is.
Overall quite a middle of the road story. I would not rush out to get another book by this author.
