About this listen

'A CHILLING new memoir by the daughter of mass murderer Fred West and his wife Rose describes the savage cruelty of her upbringing in 25 Cromwell Street, Gloucester' DAILY MAIL

'Mae, I mean this ... I'm not a good person and I let all you children down ...' Rose West, HM PRISON DURHAM

It has taken over 20 years for Mae West to find the perspective and strength to tell her remarkable story: one of an abusive, violent childhood, of her serial killer parents and how she has rebuilt her life in the shadow of their terrible crimes.

Through her own memories, research and the letters her mother wrote to her from prison, Mae shares her emotionally powerful account of her life as a West. From a toddler locked in the deathly basement to a teen fighting off the sexual advances of her father, Mae's story is one of survival. It also answers the questions: how do you come to terms with knowing your childhood bedroom was a graveyard? How do you accept the fact your parents sexually tortured, murdered and dismembered young women? How do you become a mother yourself when you're haunted by the knowledge that your own mother was a monster? Why were you spared and how do you escape the nightmare?©2018 Neil McKay (P)2018 Orion Publishing Group

This book has to be one of my top books of 2018. You may feel that there is nothing to be told about Rose and Fred west...your wrong this book does not just tell a well told story but puts on a different slant on this version because it is told through the eyes of her daughter yes the book is harrowing but the story is told against the back drop of her daughter receiving letters from her mum in prison and the journey of trying to heal and understand but not justify her parents crimes. If the narrator was fantastic one of the best I have heard. This is not just about the west murders but also about a need to move forward and try and escape the shadow of their parents crimes. The story is told with amazing candour and I applaud the author for her honesty. I have read one review where someone said that this was not a true account.. Really were they there? I don’t think so ! This is a book that inspires us that the human spirit is a truly an amazing thing. In short if you think you know this story think again not from this angle you don’t!

Captivating, listening with baited breath. Poor woman, never really thought about the impact the actions of the west’s had on their children until now. Wishing her all the luck for her future

Mae comes across articulate, sincere and honest. Her and her siblings must of faced and still face such hate all because they were children of Evil people.
Truly a remarkable woman, who has fought to be accepted.

I never expected the story to unfold as it did. To think that all the things that went on in the house that the kids had no idea about is both shocking and very sad. Life to them was normal to a large extent, yet incredibly unnerving too. The strength of the children shines through. Knowing that they were able to come together at the end, was heartwarming. My love and prayers for a continued peaceful life goes out to them all.

My heart
