excellent performance

The stories are now classic, of course. Here, the performance - subtlety of intonation, range, timing - lift excellent subject matter to gorgeous heights. Thoroughly enjoyed this.

What’s not to like

Well read, and stories ARE separated, but maybe too subtle for a few listeners. All nicely done, and a pleasure to listen to.

An M R James devotee for as long as I can remember

An excellent collection of ghost stories. A book I’m likely to listen to each and every autumn, as the nights draw in! Well read, the characters tend to be performed in a slightly similar fashion from story to story. Still not enough to overly interfere with my very real enjoyment of the book.

OK

M R James stories are brilliant. The narration is a bit monotonous. A good listen, but David Suchet's version is way better.

A Warning to the Curious

This collection, beautifully narrated by Jonathan Keeble, is a satisfying summation of James' ghostly story-telling. The humour, which is largely lost in the BBC dramatisations, is delightful, as is the atmosphere and sense of dread James conjures up for us through the written word. So if you are curious, I suggest you dive straight into this collection, but be warned - these stories are highly addictive!

Complete collection

So there are some weaker tales (and MR James does admit to some repetition in themes). The narrator does a good job though I docked a star for a really incongruous London accent in one story which was set nowhere near London and, as a result, I got badly distracted.

Excellent stories, best narrator!

These are excellent stories on their own merit, but the wonderfully talented Jonathan Keeble brings them to life with his brilliant narrating skills.
I’ve listened to this twice now and will probably listen again. It’s an absolute gem.

Comprehensive collection well read

Keeble’s unshowy characterisation, strong pacing and well delivered jump scares make this one of the best readings I have heard of these stories. Less mannered than Holdern, less obviously comical than Jacobi and less hammy than Lee, Keeble does an excellent job here. Recommended to anyone interested in ghost stories.
