Summary

Bryony Gordon has OCD.

It's the snake in her brain that has told her ever since she was a teenager that her world is about to come crashing down: that her family might die if she doesn't repeat a phrase five times, or that she might have murdered someone and forgotten about it. It's caused alopecia, bulimia, and drug dependency. And Bryony is sick of it. Keeping silent about her illness has given it a cachet it simply does not deserve, so here she shares her story with trademark wit and dazzling honesty.

A hugely successful columnist for the Telegraph, a best-selling author, and a happily married mother of an adorable daughter, Bryony has managed to laugh and live well while simultaneously grappling with her illness. Now it's time for her to speak out. Writing with her characteristic warmth and dark humour, Bryony explores her relationship with her OCD and depression as only she can.

Mad Girl is a shocking, funny, unpredictable, heart-wrenching, raw and jaw-droppingly truthful celebration of life with mental illness.

"What a book! I read this like a thriller, I was so gripped. I feel comforted by this book; by the honesty, insight, compassion, and the beautiful writing. Mad Girl is going to be seismic." (Marian Keyes)
"I loved it. A brilliant fast and funny and frank look at something that absolutely needs to be talked about in this way." (Matt Haig)
"Funny, warm and fearlessly honest. This book is a must for anyone who's ever lost their mind but was too polite to mention it." (Sali Hughes)
"A powerful and intimate look at the way our minds can torment us, this honest and rather beautiful book will bring comfort to those who fear they are alone in their madness." (Cathy Rentzenbrink)

Refreshingly Honest

This book has helped me in so many ways and would recommend it to everyone, even those without mental illness. Thank you Bryony for your honest account, it has made me accept and tell people about the things going on without feeling ashamed or embarrassed. I listened to this while running or walking which was my enjoyment for the day.

Brilliant

Hats off to Bryony. I enjoyed every moment of this book. Well written and harshly honest. True facts and descriptive symptoms of OCD and depression. In a non triggering way. I really can’t wait to see what she comes out with next. Hurry up and get a new book!!

So relatable, hilarious and inspiring

I love the honesty of this book. It’s about time people started talking the truth about their mental illnesses. Although it’s not a self help book, this audiobook has helped me more than any supposed self help book, because it reminded me that we are not alone, and together we can spread awareness and shift the stigma associated with mental illness...hopefully one day healthcare will see mental illness in the same light as physical illness.

Part of the WE

I have had OCD since a child. Unfortunately I can not afford even the £50 an hour therapy.... So it's nice to feel I am not alone.

This, freshly squeezed honestly. Shines a light in this dark corner of unhinged mental health. Simply Fantastic.

Helped my husband to know he was not alone to ❤️

Absolutely stunning

After suffering with mental illness myself, namingly anxiety, OCD and depression, and still going through that, after reading this book I have found the courage to not only be more open about things going on but I am looking at therapy options I can go through. I have had depression since I was 8, diagnosed. I am now 17 and this, like matt haigs reasons to stay alive, has given me hope once again.
