About this listen

Maigret finds himself back on the Rue des Acacias just 10 days after cracking another case there. This time it is the murder of a criminal Maigret has known for over 20 years and one he always suspected was behind a string of jewellery robberies in the city. Maigret's patience is tested as he eliminates neighbour by neighbour in his hunt for the murderer.

This novel has been published in a previous translation as Maigret Bides His Time.

This direct sequel to Maigret Defends Himself wraps up an investigation that Maigret has been pursuing, off and on, for twenty years. Effectively the two stories make one long book, although each is written so cleverly that you could read either as a standalone. (I suggest you don't though - it's much more effective in the proper order). Although the crime in this is brutal and well plotted, as ever it's the character work that really draws you in. The ending is not only satisfying, but unexpectedly poignant. This is sensational crime writing and a study of the dark side of human nature that you may find getting under your skin - in a way that only Simenon can. Gareth Armstrong remains the perfect narrator.

As Always it's Not Really About the Crime

This is, without doubt, the best of the Maigret novels I have read. The plot, dialogue and descriptions create the most gripping atmosphere. This really is a superb piece of writing and I can understand why Simenon is so highly regarded. The narration, by Gareth Armstrong could not be bettered and adds so much to every aspect of,this story. Don’t forget to read Maigret Defends Himself BEFORE you read this as they are linked.

Absolutely brilliant.

So very good. Mr Armstrong reads the stories very well, which are so good. Altogether a pleasure to listen to.

Splendid
