About this listen

AU TEST

In the struggle between warring parents, who will protect the child?

Garry Hartshorn and Softie Monaghan were never love's young dream. Not even on their wedding day.

Softie was sophisticated, a career woman, who owned a nice apartment overlooking St Kilda Beach. Garry had a few rough edges, plus one failed marriage and an assortment of jobs under his belt. But Softie's body clock was ticking, and Garry wanted children....

So they got married and produced the only thing they ever had in common: Matilda.

Now, two years later, their golden-haired child is at the centre of a bitter divorce and custody battle. Both parents insist that her well-being is the only thing they care about. Yet, in truth, Matilda was always the one most likely to become lost.

A different way of writing.. 3rd person... I did have to rewind a few times but actually I'm glad I persisted.

Interesting

I almost stopped listening a few times. the story line was intresting and I wanted to know where it was going, but the constant 'he said then I said and she said' then towards the end the author switched to 'so he goes then I go then he goes.... ' it got very tedious! the narrator was good or I definately would ha e given up and with out all that the story would have been good.

frustrating dialogue

I really like this author. The style of writing is different, and the way of story telling is different. This has been my favourite book to date.

This is the 7th book I've either listened to or physically read by Caroline and each one has been as good as the last.
I always go into her books knowing that the blurb is just one aspect of the reading experience I'm about to have. Caroline's books are also true, realistic looks into human behaviour and human life experiences and she makes you know the characters so intimately that you believe you know the people she is writing about.
Matilda is Missing is an intriguing tale of how people are shaped by their environment and life experiences and how couples often get communication very wrong.
I was gripped from the start and as this is the last of Caroline's books that I've not listened to on Audile, I really didn't want it to end.

ANOTHER FANTASTIC BOOK FROM CAROLINE OVERINGTON

I have to admit there were times today when I wondered why I was listening to transcript after transcript of a pretty typical warring couple going through a pretty average
Relationship breakdown …but something told me to carry on .. I am so glad I did. As someone very invested in the family court system this book brings to life the realities of the huge misunderstandings there often are between warring parents and the damage it inflicts on their children .. I personally enjoyed the ending but can see many did not .. whilst it doesn’t provide the ending many would wish for, a conclusion …
It presents reality .. there is never usually a clean cut outcome .. the child’s story continues long after the parents dispute and the family court process, there is never an “ending” because life continues with the many challenges it presents to us all and leave many unanswered questions … parents unintentionally put their own interests before the child as they are so entwined with the emotion of often their perceived truth and their own values and interpretation of how a child should be patented ..
The author handles this emotive and sensitive issue extremely well showing there are no winners in these disputes .. everyone loses especially the child .. I certainly don’t agree
With the reviews and the synopsis saying the book is about the courts being weighted in favour of the mother .. I think its message is about children having the right and need for a healthy relationship with both parents whatever the gender if it’s safe to do so and that is always in the best interests of the child ..
Two parents asking strangers to rule on what is in the best interests of their children and not being able to coparent is what damages them so badly and we can so easily fall into this trap when relationships fall apart .. a great read for parents navigating a breakdown with children and for those of us as family friends or advisors who should all be supporting the children’s best interests and not being sucked into taking sides …

A worthwhile read to any families in dispute over children

I enjoyed this all the way through but was quite disappointed with the ending which let the story down in my opinion

Disappointed with the ending

This book took a bit of time to get going, initially I thought I was reading the wrong book! But it all came together beautifully.

I enjoy Caroline Overingtons books, the subject is always thought provoking. I enjoy the narration too.
