About this listen

A Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestseller.

A page-turning debut of suspense about a young couple desperate to have a child of their own—and the unsettling consequences of getting what they always wanted.

Christopher and Hannah are a happily married surgeon and nurse with picture-perfect lives. All that’s missing is a child. When Janie, an abandoned six-year-old, turns up at their hospital, Christopher forms an instant connection with her, and he convinces Hannah they should take her home as their own.

But Janie is no ordinary child, and her damaged psyche proves to be more than her new parents were expecting. Janie is fiercely devoted to Christopher, but she acts out in increasingly disturbing ways, directing all her rage at Hannah. Unable to bond with Janie, Hannah is drowning under the pressure, and Christopher refuses to see Janie’s true nature.

Hannah knows that Janie is manipulating Christopher and isolating him from her, despite Hannah’s attempts to bring them all together. But as Janie’s behavior threatens to tear Christopher and Hannah apart, the truth behind Janie’s past may be enough to push them all over the edge.

Critic reviews

"A mesmerizing, unbearably tense thriller that will have you looking over your shoulder and sleeping with one eye open. This creepy, serpentine tale explores the darkest corners of parenthood and the profoundly unsettling lengths one will go to to keep a family together—no matter the consequences. Electrifying and atmospheric, this dark gem of a novel is one I couldn’t put down.”—Heather Gudenkauf, New York Times bestselling author

“A deep, dark, and dangerously addictive read. All-absorbing to the very end!”—Minka Kent, Washington Post bestselling author

good but predictable

was very engaged, but I never guess twists in books and I found this very easy to guess!

enjoyed the book, bot sure on ending

enjoyed the book especially seeing as I had just returned 3 different books I couldn't get into. I liked the story line and the characters even though I think the dad needs to step up and take some responsibility. wasnt too sure on the abrupt ending but still enjoyed the book

The story with no ending

An average story, ruined by the complete lack of realism in the husband’s character. Just when it looked as though he would have his eyes opened, the novel ended. So I guess the reader is supposed to imagine their own ending. What happened? Did the writer just get fed up, could she not make up her mind, or did she just think she was being trendy?
I feel like I just wasted half a week.

The Perfect Child

I enjoyed listening to the book it was a real page turner. The ending was so abrupt though I thought there must of been some kind of mistake. If it’s to be made into a sequel I would understand more, but still think it could of been wrapped up better.

If there isn't a second book...

...then I'm disappointed. I was so hopeful for a huge twist and felt a little let down by how abruptly it ended. I did enjoy the different narrators though. There's just got to be a second book, there are too many unanswered questions!

Ok

Kept thinking this book would go in different directions than it did. so much build up and so much potential but the ending was a let down. you can tell the author was a psychologist as it's all very realistic, but maybe I wanted more drama and less realism. The writing was taut. But this isn't one for flowery or overly expressive writing. it's a vehicle for the story, nothing more.

Too many loose ends

Great story until it ended really abruptly, just stopped, thought it was a faulty copy.

A captivating book

A really good, twisted thriller that intrigues and astonishes the reader. Short, choppy chapters of alternating narrators whose storytelling gradually reveal the plot. Creepy in parts and distressing in others but ultimately a captivating book.
