About this listen

Written in Greek, without any intention of publication, by the only Roman emperor who was also a philosopher, the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180) offer a remarkable series of challenging spiritual reflections and exercises developed as the emperor struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe.

Ranging from doubt and despair to conviction and exaltation, they cover such diverse topics as the nature of moral virtue, human rationality, divine providence, and Marcus' own emotions.

But while the Meditations were composed to provide personal consolation and encouragement, in developing his beliefs Marcus Aurelius also created one of the greatest of all works of philosophy: a timeless collection of extended meditations and short aphorisms that has been consulted and admired by statesmen, thinkers and readers through the centuries.

The content is great. I’ve read it before but thought it would be worth having in audio version. The audio is though a bit amateurish. There are several points where the narrator mispronounces words, misspeaks, stumbles over words, and even stops and repeats bits that were mistakes. It’s pretty poor that these errors weren’t edited out for a paid product.

Excellent content, slightly amateurish production

I didn’t think the narrator was good for this particular book. They just rambled through the content. I think the narrator may have been enhanced by reading a modernized version.

I struggled to finish it and really get into it. the language used was way too oldscool for me. I would rather have listened to a modernized version of these teachings.

To oldscool for my taste

The content is made boring and hard to follow due to the narration. Further into audiobook there is even gaps as if the person editing couldn’t be bothered to remove faults. This was cheap for a reason

Uninterested narrator

The content is very interesting but I found the accent of the reader far too strong and robotic. Please have somebody with a more neutral accent (Stephen Fry type?) to re-read it. I really wanted to finish the audible, but the accent just put me off completely, which is why I have given it a lower score.

Have somebody with a neutral accent reading please

Content has timeless wisdom. Hard to perform and proved so. Recommend for thought and learning

Very hard work listening due to the monotonous robotics voice. Really wanted to like this, but it was just too unbearable.
