About this listen

For amiable city trader Jimmy Corby, money was the new rock n' roll. His whole life was a party, adrenaline charged and cocaine fuelled. If he hadn't met Monica, he would probably have ended up either dead or in rehab. But Jimmy was as lucky in love as he was at betting on dodgy derivatives, so instead of burning out, his star just burned brighter than ever.

Rich, pampered and successful; Jimmy; Monica; and their friends lived the dream, bringing up their children with an army of domestic helps. But then it all came crashing down. And when the global financial crisis hit, Jimmy discovered that anyone can handle success. It's how you handle failure that really matters.

Political satire wrapped up in a great story. The Ben Elton comic genius comes through, mixed with the political rants that made him famous in the 1980's.

Unmistakably Ben Elton

Loved listening to this one, indeed I finished it in a week. Interesting characters and a good plot with a few twists and turns along the way. We'll worth your time.

Brilliantly conceived and written. So different from the usual murder mystery or sci-fi, which tend now to all be so similar.

Loved it, a great Ben Elton novel. An amusing tale interwoven with reality and a solid moral compass.

Brilliantly written light relief

if you like ben elton then you'll definitely like this tale. some very amusing parts. loved the way all the smallest details became relevant later in the story

Great story

Very cool analogy of the "New Labour/Old Tory" experiment of getting into bed with the financial sector during the late 90s and Noughties. Very cleverly told in continuing flashbacks between 90s and the late 2000s. Ben Elton tells the intertwining story of a group of university friends and their differing fortunes with his trademark humour. Great voice and character work from Paul Thornley. It was honestly a treat from start to finish with 'a lil bit of politics thrown in for good measure as Mr Elton might say during a stand up gig.

Funny And Thought Provoking..

I've read and listened to several Ben Elton's and enjoyed them all but after about two thirds through I had to give up listening as I was getting fed up with the constant bickering between the so called friends. As others have said this is less a story and more a social commentary and an outlet for some of Elton's views. The story is very weak and the people are all awful and unlikable.

Bicker, bicker, bicker...

This is the third Ben Elton book I have read and probably the weakest. The story keeps you engaged but it feels like Ben is trying to push home political points throughout which detracts From the story.

A little too politically forced

Really enjoyed the entertainment and opportunity to remember interesting times - great characters - great story telling - thanks to the author and narrator - what a talent to create so many instantly recognised characters from subtle variations in pitch - recommended 👍🏼

Thoughtful Page Turner

Excellent all round, really enjoyed this book, great story, great characters, Bem Elton at his finest. Paul Thornleys narration is, as always, brilliant. Thoroughly recommend.
