American society has become anti-male. Men are sensing the backlash and are responding. They're dropping out of college, leaving the workforce, and avoiding marriage and fatherhood at alarming rates. The trend is so pronounced that a number of books have been written about this man-child phenomenon, concluding that men have taken a vacation from responsibility. But why should men participate in a system that seems to be increasingly stacked against them?

As Men on Strike demonstrates, men aren't dropping out because they are stuck in arrested development; they are acting rationally in response to the lack of incentives society offers them to be responsible fathers, husbands, and providers. In addition, men are going on strike, either consciously or unconsciously, because they do not want to be injured by the myriad of laws, attitudes, and hostility against them for the crime of happening to be male in the 21st century. This book should be a must read in schools and young adult years for all boys/men. I once thought I was a feminist, until I saw that equality means tipping all the way against 50% of society, men.

Hugely thought provoking and timely. Dr Smith sensibly demonstrates what most men have suspected for years - that men are under attack in today's society . she points out how it has become acceptable to engage in anti-male rhetoric and actions which would never be tolerated against women. She illustrates convincingly and frighteningly how men are withdrawing from relationships, marriage and society's skewed expectations as they see no point in fighting a losing battle.

Dr Smith does, however, give real life examples of how men have challenged and fought back and she gives a certain hope for the future - or at least indicated how a turning point could be established.

As an American-Norwegian man with Iranian-Japanese roots, I found the concepts and ideas to be applicable regardless of which nationality or ethnicity I considered relevant. What is more, it's important for us as a society to redefine what it means to be a real man or woman. This book is just a start, as it does a phenomenal job of helping you understand the lay of the land (and potential action steps).

If you are interested in a book that is well supported by data then this is NOT for you!

the author mentions some numbers to support her arguments. However, she does not look at the numbers or the problem from different perspectives.

One example on less men wanting to get married.
She is quick to mention the decline of men getting married. she does not mention anything on the rate of woman getting married. Mentioning the female marriage rate is very important. because if it drops less than it does for men, does that imply few men get married twice? Or do woman get married less at the same rate?
She then says men want to get married less because they can have sex on demand. She does not mention anything on if woman intrinsically think the same way as men. Perhaps woman also just want easier access to several male sex partners.
She also doesnt put it in correlation to changes in the educational system or the workforce. She does not look into if men or woman want to focus on starting their career first and focusing on marriage in their 30s. Her arguments are very generalized.

Here is another example.
She says that women get fatter when married.
For this claim she offers no reference to support this claim. Furthermore, she does not consider that being married could also be positivly correlated with age. And in turn, age is positively correlated with age. She does not have any data on if a single woman in the same age of a married woman is on average heavier.

When coming with claims of negative things woman do she would never mentions if men do the same thing. With the marriage example, she does not mention anything about male weight gain.

Overall, this book leans more towards hate speech than to being an academic or educational book.
