About this listen

Winner of the British Book Awards, Outstanding Achievement Award, 2009.

When Michael Palin was researching his novel Hemingway's Chair, his interest was stimulated by Hemingway's appetite for travel and "Papa's" evocations of the places he knew. In pursuit of Hemingway, Palin begins at the beginning, in Oak Park, Idaho, then travels to Italy where Hemingway served in the Ambulance Brigade in the First World War. Then on to Paris in the "Roaring Twenties", bull-running at Pamplona and Hemingway's love affair with Spain. Hemingway became disillusioned and returned to the States, where he lived on Key West in Florida before moving to Sun Valley, Idaho, until the Spanish civil war recalled him.

"Easy-going Palin's essential niceness and unpretentious ability to relate to anyone from any culture makes him Britain's best-loved travelling companion." ( Talking Business)

The Best Palin Adventure

This is the most enjoyable Palin adventure. I am not a big fan of Hemingway but the passion and location hopping that Palin brings just brings it all to life.

A happy companion

I love Palin's previous works, and this I'm delighted to say was equally enjoyable.

As a fan of Hemingway too, the combination of storytelling from Palin and the interesting life Hemingway had, this book leaves a nice warm feeling and a thirst for more good reads/listenings.

Palin at it again!

Was always a fan of Michael Palin's odd travelogues, which all had a geographic theme to them, while this one does not; here he does not travel around the world, across a desert or mountain range, but follows the life and movements of his favourite author. Very well written, amusing and serious, and read wonderfully by the author.

Great Listen

Palin seemed to enjoy telling the story, which I think matters. Two travel legends, but totally different people.

Unnecessary annoying background music

As always, thank you Michael for another great book. It was spoilt a little by annoying background music fading in and out at various places, would be much better without that. Nonetheless a great adventure well told, recommend.

the wrong way round

I really enjoy watching the DVDs of the programmes contemporaneous with listening but this time they followed a different path. Quite confusing. But still good.

Personal journey of an icon

Where does Michael Palin's Hemingway Adventure rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Very relaxing and informative insight into the life of a 20th century icon. Very much a personal journey read in an amiable style which so characterises Palin. Learned some new things but probably the best part was the feeling that you are actually there in each location he visits.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Michael Palin's Hemingway Adventure?

It was all memorable, I loved it.

What does Michael Palin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I can't imagine that the experience would be quite the same without Michael reading it. He leaves room for your mind to imagine without intruding.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

It's already a TV series!

Any additional comments?

Get it.

he lived life to the full, until he couldn't.

A complex story of human frailty, cruelty and hope, coupled with the perils of fame and fortune. Michael Palin tells this story very sensitively. I'm not particularly a fan of Hemingway's books, but he lived his full measure of life, until he couldn't anymore.

Loved it, wish I could go back to Key West and really take it in.

Production!!

I have loved every TV series, book and audio book by Michael Palin, but felt that this audio book was let down by the poor production and especially the awful unnecessary background music. Remove it and it would be up there with his other works.
