Summary

As a bookish, introverted database programmer, Morgen Keller never thought she was a candidate for a midlife crisis. That was before her husband divorced her, her boss let her go, and her grandmother died. Forty wasn’t supposed to look like this.

When Morgen heads up to the small town of Bellrock, Washington, to settle the estate, she looks forward to taking a peaceful break from life and figuring out what she’s going to do next.

But peace isn’t to be had. The old farmhouse is full of witch paraphernalia, a fearsome werewolf has claimed the property, and contrary to what the family was told, Grandma didn’t die of natural causes.

Embroiled in a mystery, and heir to powers she knew nothing about, Morgen must turn to the only person who might be able to help: the werewolf who threatened to rip her throat out for trespassing.

This isn’t the fresh start on life that Morgen had in mind.

Enjoyably different & smart take on the new witch

I did enjoy this book. It is quite different and smarter than similar stories. An upgrade indeed. Loved that part. I got a bit annoyed with the bit of one more grandmother dead before she could teach her granddaughter her magical stuff. But forgave that part as soon as seeing the clueless heiress was enjoyably quite different from the lot and had a logical brain of her own. Love this different take on this recurring theme. The introvert aspect of the story was amusing as well. Am happy to see the heroine isn´t quite as much introvert as seemed in the beginning though. To me the more grim take on the life in the story was a bit startling, but guess I can not adore a more believable take on magic and then complain about that part. And I am not, complaining. Just mentioning it. There might be a slow burn romance in the story, but I guess we will see in book two. And I am heading there. The narration is a bit slow, but that is what the speed button is for. All in all, an interesting, clever and well written story. Good worldbuilding and plots. Same as the character building. What I expect from Lindsay Buroker. Am slowly, but surely, plowing through her entire library.

Loved it

Slow burn sort of romance. Action mystery. Witches and wolves and a clueless but not stupid heroine who inherits her grand house. Left my intrigued enough to purchase book 2.

This book isn’t half as good as this author’s Death Before Dragons series. Not sure if it was partly because its the first book of the series and has to set the scene, so perhaps I’ll enjoy the next book more. It just seemed a bit lost and meandering, and failed to grab me.
