Summary
New entry in the best-selling Monster Hunter International series by Dragon Award-winning authors Larry Correia and Sarah A. Hoyt
When Owen Pitt and the rest of the Monster Hunter International crew are called away to mount a month’s-long rescue mission in a monster-infested nightmare dimension, Julie Shackleford - Owen’s wife and descendant of MHI founder Bubba Shackleford - is left behind. Her task: hold down the fort and take care of her new baby son Ray. Julie’s devoted to the little guy, but the slow pace of office work and maternity leave are starting to get to her. But when a routine field call brings her face-to-face with an unspeakable evil calling itself Brother Death, she’ll get more excitement than she ever hoped for.
Julie is the Guardian of a powerful ancient artifact known as the Kamaresh Yar, and Brother Death wants it. In the wrong hands, it could destroy reality as we know it. Julie would die before giving it up.
Then Ray goes missing, taken by Brother Death. The price for his safe return: the Kamaresh Yar. If Julie doesn’t hand over the artifact it means death - or worse - for baby Ray. With no other choice left to her, Julie agrees to Brother Death’s demands. But when you’re dealing with an ancient evil, the devil is in the details.
To reclaim her son, Julie Shackleford will have to fight her way through necromantic death cults, child-stealing monsters, and worse. And she’ll have to do it all before Brother Death can unleash the Kamaresh Yar.
It’s one woman against an army of monsters. But Julie Shackleford is no ordinary woman - she’s one tough mother!

A little simple but very enjoyable.
I'm a big MHI fan and so always enjoy new books, be them full stories of short story collections and I've never experienced a turkey.
Of all the books, ai think this is my least favourite. I'm not sure if this is down to the rather simplistic story or the weirdly rushed move from the final chapter to epilogue.
In either case, the book simply didn't grab me as well as the earlier ones but I do have to mention the fantastic narration by Bailey Carr which both made the story easy to follow but really gave a sense of emotion to the whole story.
I did enjoy the book and the growth of Julie as a character and certainly look forward to seeing if we have a Harry Koegh Jr situation coming (a nod to fans of Necroscope there) but doubt I'd listen to it again like I have the other books in the series.

nice read
nice to hear from another character for a change. it did feel very unlikely at times just getting help at the right time each time.

Monster Hunters
Although I love the series I found it difficult to listen to this book as I found the narrator for Julie not as I expected! I think it would have been better if the narrator would have had a stronger voice.

Julie Shackleford sounds whiny...
The basic storyline is ok but unfortunately, for me, the writting wasn't completely successful and performance was poor. Julie's character was performed with no Southern accent and portrayed in an unvarying, almost whiny, state of tension, which made her sound weak. The narration felt flat, lacking movement in pitch and emotion, because everything was equally worrying all of the time. There was also a lot of repetition of her concern for her child but, again lacking in variation of expression, it just sounded like whiny filler; it certainly didn't engage me with the character's fears. Maybe a different narrator and I would probably not have been so irritated by it. I finished the story, just enough Correia for that!

Good for a drinking game
Sorry but the writing and performance isn’t as good as other books in the series.
Julie sounds very unlike the Julie we’ve met before, weak and watery not the strong tough female we expec

Good story telling Julie Shacklefords back story and introducing Bubba jr to the series.
Why did anyone think it was a good idea to turn Julie into some air headed californium soccer mum? Truly awful narration which totally ruined the listen. only listened to it all because of the linking to past and future books. 3 chapters in and I want to give it up but couldn't, I have never been so relieved when I finished it.

Worst by far
I can't decide if it's a sub par story or if it's the terrible narration that makes this so boring. It's read as just one really long sigh. I'd have thought that someone would have also picked up on the fact that she keeps calling Earl "Har bing er" you'd have thought she'd know his bloody name at least.

A bit different but fab
I really enjoyed this book, I don't normally like female narrators, wierd as I'm female but I really enjoyed listening to Bailey and would happily listen to her again. I think its because most of the books I listen to have male main leads! the story was great though I hated the use of the word "Kid" all the time, when describing your 6 month old son, I would not be saying my Kid all the time but my son or baby, but im British so maybe its that. I love all the MHI books and this was no exception!

Pleasantly Surprised.
Other reviews made me think this was going to be bad, but I was so pleased to be wrong. The story was great, the different narrator did an excellent job, and ended just right.
