About this listen
Don’t miss the brand-new installment in the fantastic Stamford Mysteries series! Perfect for fans of M.C. Beaton and Richard Osman.
Who knew a harmless town fair could be so polarising – or so deadly?
When auctioneer Felicia Grant’s best friend, Stamford Mayor Cassandra Lane, talked her into helping with the town’s annual Georgian Fair, she expected the worst she’d have to endure was the corset. But when the fair’s headline speaker turns up dead in the hook-a-duck pool, and more murders follow in quick succession, she finds herself investigating a serial killer for the second time in less than a year – and this time the stakes are even higher…

That difficult second book
I'm left feeling somewhat disappointed. In contrast to the first book this plot felt contrived and a lot of time was wasted on scene setting from the previous story which is frustrating if you've already read that one. Characters appear that have little or no connection with the plot and presumably are included just to divert attention. The sergeant's attitude to the main character goes from one extreme to another. All in all it's just not as good as book 1. Shame.

First was better
Unfortunately the narration is stilted. I remember thinking that with the first. But the story and the way the first was written meant the stilted narration could be overlooked. Accents changed for the characters throughout the book. Is Jack from London, Birmingham or Stoke?
The writing. Well. There was just too much of the airy fairy fillers. Describing scenes and people using long poetic and needless words. I got to the end. But it is not the best book I have listened to by a long shot.

Another satisfying story
I really enjoyed the first of this series and the second lived up to it. These are gentle whodunits with likeable characters. Nice twists in the plot keep up the interest. It moves quite slowly but the backstories are quite entertaining. Definitely not 'gritty', more Agatha Christie or Midsummer Murders. I can't wait for the next one. Excellently read as well.
