About this listen

From award-winning male/male author Josh Lanyon: a librarian finds himself in a plot right out of one of his favorite mystery novels

Librarian Carter Matheson is determined to enjoy himself on a Scottish bus tour for fans of mystery author Dame Vanessa Rayburn. Sure, his ex, Trevor, will also be on the trip with his new boyfriend, leaving Carter to share a room with a stranger, but he can’t pass up a chance to meet his favorite author.

Carter’s roommate turns out to be John Knight, a figure as mysterious as any character from Vanessa’s books. His strange affect and nighttime wanderings make Carter suspicious. When a fellow traveler’s death sparks rumors of foul play, Carter is left wondering if there’s anyone on the tour he can trust.

Drawn into the intrigue, Carter searches for answers, trying to fend off his growing attraction toward John. But as unexplained tragedies continue, the whole tour must face the fact that there may be a murderer in their midst - but who?

Great fun

An excellent story with great voicing by the narrator. A bit like a gay Murder She Wrote with a male lead, and it keeps you guessing 'til the end.

Perfect

Really enjoyed this. Everything a murder mystery should be. A classic tale in the fantastic old style with added humour and that touch of romance. Loved it.

not normally my thing.

Normally my preferred genre has paranormal or supernatural or magical themes, so its very rare a book like this holds my attention. i guessed one of the twists before the boat scene, but did not expect it to go the way it did. So thoroughly enjoyed it.

Very Enjoyable

Such an enjoyable listen! I loved the plots little twists and turns which were all added to by a smattering of holiday romance and snarky ex boyfriends.
Highly recommended if you want a light murder mystery with a little romance thrown in.

Loved this book!

I am a Josh Lanyon fan, but I don't like all books equally however this is one of my favourites of Josh's. I've read it twice - first switching between reading and listening, the second time just listening to the audio version and I found it an engaging - and often humorous - experience. Carter is a great character, well aware of his flaws in the role of amateur sleuth and the other people on the trip with him were interesting in varied ways (some were awful!)
I really got drawn into the story, the narration was great and I just enjoyed the whole thing!

A Highland Fling

Lightweight drama where all the tools in JL's writing kit are used: mystery, suspense, a good plot, humour, nice MCs you can like and enjoy, a mm romance, and a ending worth waiting for. This story is like a prototype for Winter Kill, and there are so many reflections of Adrien English style dialogue you have to stop to realize which book you are listening to. Have flown into Glasgow Airport and visited several of the locations mentioned, so could picture the scenery and places. Usually in a JL book, there is a dark undercurrent of menace and malice, this was here in spades albeit in a light cheery way.

The Gary Furlong narration is the icing on the cake; he voices all the accents perfectly.

Slow start but get really good!

I was about to give up on this book, but I’m really glad I didn’t. It has a slow start and we are introduced to a lot of different characters, that doesn’t seem that interesting. But it evolves into a really interesting book with a sweet romance.
