Summary

Before he was an Elfin Lord - before he even joined that secret group of Mages - Jamie Riley was a Mage recruited by the FBI and the Office of Supernatural Policing and Investigation. A new-minted Inspector sent into one of the most complicated supernatural regions in the country: Los Angeles.

The rest of OSPI’s LA team has grown comfortable with allowing politics and pragmatism to decide which cases they pursue, which criminals they charge - but when Jamie’s investigation suggests that a pillar of the supernatural community has killed in cold blood, he will let nothing get in the way of getting the murderer.

Not even his career.

That was all right

Pretty good little story. Quite bureaucratic though. When I enter into contemporary magical stories I like comedy or fantasy, not just straight forward policy and officers of the law. I might check out the book series though.

Unexpectedly great short story.

Loved this and will find others in the series. The narrator is enjoyable, so I'd also listen to other things narrated by him. 5 stars.

A great prequel to a series.

This is a bit of a different genre for me and I really enjoyed this story- enough that I plan to listen to more. Murder by Magic is exactly what this is about. An introduction to OSPI and the supernatural policing
Ray Porter is always good value for money as a narrator, he makes the implausible feel very real and brings the characters to life. The writing was good: fluid and imaginative with good pacing and an interesting cast of characters.

Ray Porter…

I listened to this because it was free and because I’ll listen to anything narrated by Ray Porter, and I’m glad I did. Crime fiction plus magic, that works for me. Now I need to listen to the rest of this series :)

Not my kind of thing

lots of steely jaws and sparkling eyes. Perhaps long in the world would make more sense. Intrigued by the wizarding racism, bring back the star belly sneeks.

Narrator’s voice too old

I was left with many questions at the end of this short story. I kept losing track of what was happening because I was always thinking how old is Jamie? He is supposed to be young? Really? How does he know all this stuff? And the voice kept throwing me off because it is that of an older man, very sure of himself
Ray Porter gave a good performance and my rating is no reflection of this but voice inappropriate for the story
