Summary

In a world of elves and dwarves and sprites and mages, Tane Carver is a human with no gift but his wits. Which, to be fair, did get him into the world's most prestigious university of magical technology.

For a while. Until his lack of magic was discovered. And then it all came crashing down.

But when a student is murdered on campus behind unbreakable wards, Tane gets a second chance. Solving an impossible crime should be easy for the man who fooled the university's best mages for years. Except he's not counting on the head constable being an old flame who isn't so fond of him anymore. Or on Kadka, the half-crazy half-orc who insists she's his partner - whether he likes it or not.

Not to mention the masked mage who keeps trying to kill him. Now, Tane's survival depends on the one truth that has never failed him. The flaw in all magic that those who have it prefer to ignore: the mage.

Outsmart the mage, and you outsmart the spell. And outsmarting mages is what Tane does best.

Travis Baldree

I only got this audio because I like the narrator Travis Baldree, having listened to quite a few books with him narrating.
To be honest it took a while to get into the story, however once the characters evolved and the storyline progressed, I found myself actually enjoying the book.
I listen at night to help me fall asleep and rewind to where I nodded off the next night. 😴
Worth a listen if you like fantasy and escaping everyday, in your mind at least.

Unexpectedly good

Wasn’t sure what I was going to get with this title. However I was pleasantly surprised. The world building was detailed enough without being overwhelming and the characters likeable. Kadka, as the foil for the main protagonist, is particularly likeable. Will definitely look at the rest in the series. Travis Baldree’s performance was very good and really helped to bring the characters to life.

A Detective and magic, what isnt to like?

Brilliantly narrated, a pleasure to listen to.

Looking forward to listening to more in this series.
A stand alone book in its own right but this world and its characters want to tell you more.

Rwally enjoyed this short story

The main character is a bit arrogant and annoying but not insufferable. The story is well crafted and I liked the worldbuilding. The setting was well described and the characters were well fleshed out. All in all this was a well narrated and enjoyable story.

It must be hard to write Detective novels

Maybe detective novels are not for me, but for most of the Magebreakers series I felt like logic was sacreficed to make the plot exciting, the first book was fine but in later books the bad guys just straight up do stuff that was supposed to be impossible, and are always one step ahead of Carver even if means zero sense, always knowing everything but refusing to act on it.
