About this listen

Cult horror director Stanislas Cordova hasn't been seen in public since 1971. When his daughter Ashley is found dead in a believed suicide, journalist Scott McGrath is not convinced. For McGrath, another death connected to the legendary director seems more than a coincidence. Driven by revenge, curiosity and a need for the truth, he finds himself pulled into a hypnotic, disorientating world which begins to threaten his grip on reality.

A Marlow-esque detective story that transforms into a psychological thriller, great narrator, all the characters have fascinating back stories.

Gripping "noir" with a supernatural twist

The story and narration totally drew me in and held me captivated.

I have a long journey to work, a two hour round trip and have been doing this for awhile and audiobooks have been a godsend to help pass the time.

I judge audiobooks in how eager I am to jump in the car and get to work and start to listen. Night Film was one of those audiobooks

Loved it!

Completely gripping. Whatever faults her first novel had - so overwritten one couldn't forget someone had written it - are not on show here. The pace is immensely fast for such a big novel and the tone as fleet as it is dark. Jake Weber needs to read more audiobooks. I would now listen to another just for him alone. A low, expressive voice, perfectly paced. If you read this novel as well as listen to it, download the free app from itunes - like a series of dvd extras of music and audio, it extends what is already an epically good read. This is a real treat. Has - impossible to imagine, I know - Danielewski's House of Leaves made it to Audible. This is a near-cousin to it.

Completely gripping

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narration should have been more Mickey Spillane really. The plot does not justify the length,it was a relief to get to the end.

If you’ve listened to books by Marisha Pessl before, how does this one compare?

I believe this her first book, its a promising start. There were parts that were excellent.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

I think the narration let it done somewhat, maybe i have been spoilt just finished listening to 8 Jo Nesbo books read by Sean Barrett.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

If the actors were exceptionally

Any additional comments?

It didn't leave me with feeling of wanting more,or trying to find more from the writer. As i mentioned just finished a Jo Nesbo run and prior to that Steig Larrson, somayhave been a little spoiled

Should have been half the length, poor naratation.

It’s been 3 months and still I think about this book despite listening to many others since. It felt a little slow in the beginning but the narrator was brilliant and soon I was hooked! Creepy, ambiguous, unsettling and thrilling. Twists I didn’t see coming and vivid characters, I still feel unsettled by Cordova. This book and narration has very easily become a top favourite!

I can’t stop thinking about this book

I liked how the story progressed through the investigation of clues by the main characters leading to new revelations. The book was well written and the looming figure of Cordova sufficiently mysterious to want to find more about. There is a long chapter towards the end which does not fit well together with the rest of the book. I also liked the very open ending.
The only negative was the substandard narrator and especially with some characters who all appeared to be speaking really slowly and like they were suffering from some kind of disability. With a different narrator I would have enjoyed this book even more. Highly recommended!

Very enjoyable

It was a struggle but I persevered for it to become interesting. But not the most enjoyable book I've listened to.

Hard Work To Begin With

This Audiobook is close enough to being 24 hours long, which normally could put me off. But I could have carried on listening to this for a further 24 hours quite happily. The characters, the tone, the story, everything had me so gripped that I can easily say that this was one of the best audiobook I have listened to so far. And my library is fairly extensive. Full marks from me, oh and the narrator is excellent too.

Riveting

I know everyone loves this book, but I just found it a little long and unnecessarily so. I found some areas enjoyable but found the actual mystery of Cordova and his Daughter kind of dragged. The narrative felt like it was somewhat out of focus. Characters would just sort of show up and give exactly enough narrative as they should. Also it did not scare me one bit. One thing I will say is that the performance by Jake Weber was fantastic.

Meh

I could not stop listening to this book. Unfortunately I have now reached the end. I will probably listen to it all over again.
The narrator is brilliant.
