About this listen

Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip - a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfre. The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there - which makes Scoutmaster Tim’s job a little easier. But for some reason, he can’t shake the feeling that something strange is in the air this year. Something waiting in the darkness. Something wicked . . .

It comes to them in the night. An unexpected intruder, stumbling upon their campsite like a wild animal. He is shockingly thin, disturbingly pale, and voraciously hungry - a man in unspeakable torment who exposes Tim and the boys to something far more frightening than any ghost story. Within his body is a bioengineered nightmare, a horror that spreads faster than fear. One by one, the boys will do things no person could ever imagine.

And so it begins. An agonizing weekend in the wilderness. A harrowing struggle for survival. No possible escape from the elements, the infected . . . or one another.

This story had a great old school horror feel to it. Not for the squeamish! Loved the story, enjoyed the narration too.

Classic horror story

The story was well paced throughout. Characters were well formed and all added value. The narrator however was so monotone - almost like a bad AI reading a script. I prefer voice actors to drab readers.
But, if you can get past that, the story is good, gruesome and graphic.

Graphic horror if you like that kinda thing

Despite the great narration of Nick Cutter’s ‘The Troop’ the story just never really got out of first gear for me. Some really interesting ideas that I feel the author failed to fully exploit.

Well narrated got through it in 3 days, couldn't stop. Dark, very disturbing, the description is fantastic albeit horrific. Sea turtle scene is barbaric but all round fantastic horror story.

Disturbingly Addictive

good narrator, carried the plot. metaphor - heavy writing that gets fairly repetitive but I enjoyed it and will probably buy another one of Nick's.

I decided to finally read this book after all the hype from TikTok. I must say, that the hype is well deserved! This is an amazing novel. It draws you in and I just couldn’t stop listening to this book. It does give you a massive sense of dread, hopelessness for the boys and sheer terror. It’s my first book from this author and I’ll certainly be reading more books from him again. Loved this book, even though I didn’t find it as disturbing as some people were saying, it’s certainly messed up and has some truly gross moments, but not as bad as some people say but I would say this is not for people with a weak stomach.

Creepy, gross and insane

A viceral topic endured with the human aspect. Read this after The Ruin, this was superior.

Beautifully written horror

I decided to give this novel (which I'd never heard of) a try as master of horror, Stephen King, called it terrifying. Stephen King was right.

Woah
