Summary
Suburbia. Shady, tree-lined streets; well-tended lawns; and cozy homes. A nice, quiet place to grow up. Unless you are teenage Meg or her crippled sister, Susan.
On a dead-end street, in the dark, damp basement of the Chandler house, Meg and Susan are left captive to the savage whims and rages of a distant aunt who is rapidly descending into madness. It is a madness that infects all three of her sons and finally the entire neighborhood. Only one troubled boy stands hesitantly between Meg and Susan and their cruel, torturous deaths. A boy with a very adult decision to make....

Harrowing
This book was a page turner indeed. But at the same time so disturbing I didn’t want to hear anymore but like the characters I couldn’t resist to see what was going to happen next. I found my self thinking about what was happening I. The story while doing chores even when I was painting my kitchen! Couldn’t get it out of my head

Toned Down.
I have seen the movie and heard it had been toned down from the book. Oh is it toned down very toned down. Not a enjoyable read in anyway but it's so well written you're drawn in. Be warned this isn't for everybody .

A harrowing glimpse at abuse
An important but upsetting listen. It shows the depth of human cruelty and those who shape it. Will definitely longer with fears and questions for any listener, but an accomplished portrayal based on true crime.

Disturbing and emotional
I loved this book, it’s quite thought provoking too, so many people involved it really makes you question what people are capable of,

I don't know what to say
A really great book. But one of the saddest and most disturbing things I have ever listened to.

absolutely soul crushing
amazing but very depressing. it's so sad to experience how blurred the lines of right or wrong becomes when an authority figure allows it.

Very well written and narrated by the author
This author is so good, and writes from a child’s perspective so well… I was really engrossed and enjoying it but just had to give up halfway because it was too upsetting and I knew it was going to get darker and more disturbing. Obviously, the title details do give this away, but he writes so well about how a child’s mind can become distorted and corrupted that it’s hard not to read this without it playing on your mind afterwards, so with great regret - because he’s clearly a very talented author - I won’t be finishing it. However, to contradict myself (!) I do thoroughly recommend this book as do many other reviewers if you enjoy this genre. He is also an excellent narrator of his own work, incidentally.

Not for faint-hearted
This is a wonderful novel with depth and high interest. Well read by the author.
But it is brutal. Definitely look for a review/synopsis first and decide if it’s for you. The descriptions are graphic and painful to hear.
