About this listen

Suburbia. Shady, tree-lined streets; well-tended lawns; and cozy homes. A nice, quiet place to grow up. Unless you are teenage Meg or her crippled sister, Susan.

On a dead-end street, in the dark, damp basement of the Chandler house, Meg and Susan are left captive to the savage whims and rages of a distant aunt who is rapidly descending into madness. It is a madness that infects all three of her sons and finally the entire neighborhood. Only one troubled boy stands hesitantly between Meg and Susan and their cruel, torturous deaths. A boy with a very adult decision to make....

Critic reviews

" The Girl Next Door is alive...it does not just promise terror but actually delivers it.... It's a page-turner." (Stephen King)

My favourite book I have read this year. But I never want to read it again.

Thrilling

A really great book. But one of the saddest and most disturbing things I have ever listened to.

I don't know what to say

amazing but very depressing. it's so sad to experience how blurred the lines of right or wrong becomes when an authority figure allows it.

absolutely soul crushing

This author is so good, and writes from a child’s perspective so well… I was really engrossed and enjoying it but just had to give up halfway because it was too upsetting and I knew it was going to get darker and more disturbing. Obviously, the title details do give this away, but he writes so well about how a child’s mind can become distorted and corrupted that it’s hard not to read this without it playing on your mind afterwards, so with great regret - because he’s clearly a very talented author - I won’t be finishing it. However, to contradict myself (!) I do thoroughly recommend this book as do many other reviewers if you enjoy this genre. He is also an excellent narrator of his own work, incidentally.

Very well written and narrated by the author

Brilliant storyline, well told, it's gripping and disturbing. Look forward to hearing/reading more from this author. Would highly recommend.

Absolutely fantastic

This is a wonderful novel with depth and high interest. Well read by the author.

But it is brutal. Definitely look for a review/synopsis first and decide if it’s for you. The descriptions are graphic and painful to hear.

Not for faint-hearted

A beautifully written book that no one can love. So harrowing made worse by the fact that it's based on a brutal true case of child abuse.

What can I say...

It’s hard to review this book, it’s written well it’s narrated well but my god it’s harrowing to listen too! It’s so harrowing it’s hard to say i enjoyed it, it just feels wrong to say that! I’m not saying don’t listen but be mindful that it’s hard listening

Harrowing listen

This resembles the true crime story of Sylvia Likens and her sister, in fact , I am 100 percent certain that just a subtle few changes made it a work of fiction .

Tragic and scary and worse still, a true story bar nothing

Ok, the book is well written, but it's still trash. It appears to be a thought provoking piece but in reality it's similar to the feeling of staving to death. You know what's going to happen the whole time and you can't stop it.

Its just not enjoyable.

Also Im totally for the author reading his own book, that's something that I like but he keeps making a weird noise with his mouth like he needs a drink and it's a bit off putting.

I'm not sure who this is for
