Loved the writing. skillful and original. the story was engrossing and the characters felt real. It was extreme and made me squirm but could have been worse! thankfully it stopped where it did. knocked a star off as I feel I could have had a bit more info about the demented torturer... but a solid read that I weirdly enjoyed.

Don’t bother. The author basically has no idea how to write a story, or a character, this is just a book where things happen, not very nice things, but just things. There’s basically no sense of emotion or investment in any of the “characters” it reads like a creepy pasta you can find online for free. People say this is an extreme horror book, it’s not it’s garbage :)

I was recommended this book from TikTok and chose this book specifically because it was the only one in the bunch written by a woman—I figured it would be a refreshing take on the gory horror genre. Still, it did feel like it was written to please a male fantasy somehow, while still being unreasonably disgusting. I feel this might be a problem with the genre sometimes, but it did feel disappointing still.

Is it allowed for something to be too vile?

to the author: Whoever hurt you, I hope they suffer—and that you get a really good therapist. Because seriously, what the actual hell did I just read?

This novella truly lends itself to narration over reading. I enjoy reading Splatterpunk or Extreme Horror novels, but I MUCH prefer to listen to them, and in my opinion, this novel is best experienced as an audio, rather than being read. Why? Well, the best thing about gruesome audiobooks is that they keep going, they keep playing, even when you want them to stop! For those moments of violence, brutality and gore, we can often look up from the page and shudder.... but with an audio, you wriggle and squirm right through the whole thing and it doesn't let up!

Another reason why I enjoyed this audio rendition of No One Rides for Free, and feel it is best experienced through audio rather than reading, is that this novella was very well written! Many Splatterpunks or extreme horror novels are not particularly well written, or simply rely on clichéd descriptions. This is not so with this novel. This novel was beautifully crafted. "A fearsome white pimple sat on his shoulder like a pearl", "like piss coated planks", " he was like a stone being thrown into peaceful waters".
The descriptions throughout this novel are visceral and evocative, and rather poetic at times. This lends itself so well to narration! "Sun scorched skull" is such beautiful sibilance that comes across really well from this narrator, who has clear, clipped and focussed diction.
The narration was simply spot on! The narrator had a generic almost accentless narration, however, she gave each character their own diction, voice and intonation.
One of the main characters has a particular way of speaking, which just comes across so well in audio. This character's particular word choices "ent", "tell me 'bout", "spittin' 'poon" lend itself to a unique American accent, one that the narrator pulled off very well.
The narrator did a diligent job, was emotionless when required, but also imbued the appropriate tone and emotion where necessary.
Overall, this deliciously disgusting novel was narrated very well, and is a must for any Splatter fan!

this was a wild ride, disgusting and disturbing, filled with gore, SA and horror. if you want the "worst" of splatterpunk, this might be for you.

This is the most horrific book I have ever listened to. It is well written and the characters are easy to feel sympathy for as a family is brutalised by an unwanted stranger in their car. Sickening in parts and sorry to say I found it humorous in parts too, this was maybe an automatic reaction to the horrors being described. If listening to this be sure that you want to continue after chapter 5 where the author gives a warning of things to come. If you thought the first 5 chapters were bad then take heed, the rest is much worse. The narration was excellent and brought the horrors to life.
I was kindly given a copy of the book by the publisher and leave this honest review.

This is just a poor attempt at trying to shocking a reader. Don't even give it a second glance, truly woeful writing and unnecessarily cruel. Do yourself a favour and stay away from this chip paper.
