A thoroughly engrossing and heart warming story following the life of a young Lucy recently orphaned and the people brought into her circle as she grows up. It highlights the different classes of that time and as she embarks on a career not considered proper for a woman she, and her friends travel across from the UK to France during WWI highlighting the incredible work done by so many. Most people can trace a family link back to this terrible war and although fictional, the story is very thought provoking. The story entwines the lives of Lucy’s closest friends and family and their individual struggles and triumphs from pre war, through WWI and afterwards. A very heart warming story well written and beautifully read. Ideal for lovers of fictional 20th century historical tales.

Thank you Val Wood for writing such a wonderful story and read by Anne Dover so well, as always. The First World War was awful for men and women including those at home. I found it very moving - especially when Albert was mentioned and soldiers were captured as I was told my father was sent from there to Munster to a prison camp - but he never spoke about it to my mother - so I was told. Life was so different for families who had little and those who had more but all the families were so caring. I loved it.

No Place for a Woman is one of the best books which I have enjoyed as Lucy's story opened up to me a time of history in the city of Hull and showed to me how the class system could rule.

What other book might you compare No Place for a Woman to, and why?

No Place for a Woman is for me a wonderful work of historical fiction, with its warm characters and their love for each other reminded me of Ellie Dean's series yet it was based on the earlier years of British history.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

where Lucy finally realises she simply wanted to follow in the steps of her Father and this led to her finally getting to know who her parents were and her own family's history.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

a heartwarming story of one woman who showed her bravery by simply being where it mattered..

this is a wonderful book which though slow to start but the basis of the story had to be told for the real story to begin!
