About this listen

Kathleen Turner has goals. She moved to Indianapolis to start seeing to them, but things aren’t going quite as well as she’d hoped. She’s a runner for a high-powered law firm in town, not the most prestigious of positions, but it and her part-time bartender gig at least pays the bills. And one of the senior partners is a dreamboat in that obscenely rich, disturbingly good looking, slightly snobbish sort of way.

It’s the middle of the night when Kathleen hears fighting coming from her neighbor Sheila’s apartment. As disturbing as that is, it’s the ominous sound of silence afterwards that keeps Kathleen from falling back to sleep. Slipping from bed with the intention of making sure everything is okay, Kathleen knocks on her friend’s door, only to find Sheila murdered, her naked body sprawled on sheets stained crimson with her blood.

Shock and horror are followed by gritty determination when it becomes clear that Sheila’s death isn’t random and it isn’t the result of a jealous boyfriend. It’s the opening gambit in a web of murder, deceit, conspiracy, and fraud that stretches to the law firm for which Kathleen works. Maybe to the very office that Blane Kirk commands.

And Kathleen Turner, law office runner, can trust no one if she wants to survive.

I would pigeon hole this as a romantic thriller, I have to come write out and say it, I enjoyed it, I didn't care about the ludicrous coincidences, it's written well with fun and flair, with entertaining narration by Angela Dawe.
Life has not been too great for Kat, she's had to give up a lot in the past now it's time to get her life on track, even if that means being on the bottom of the corporate ladder. Kat works two jobs, a runner in a prestigious law firm, her boss being the witch from hell and a bar maid in the evening in a busy pub, where skimpy costumes seem obligatory.
Throw in two alpha males, a murdered prostitute, electoral fraud and some very powerful enemies it becomes apparent that no-one is really telling her the truth.
Stupidly naive she has a steep learning curve, but she's like a dog with a bone and no matter the cost will get to the bottom of her friends murder.
Worth the credit to escape for a few hours.

Fun romantic escapism....

At first, the narrator's voice really grates on me. I thought that she sounded stilted, and that she sounded like she was quite clearly reading the story. However, around halfway through I managed to ignore it and just enjoy the story.

Great Story, Annoying Narrator

Although I had already read this book a few years ago, I decided to get the audible version after listening to the China Mac series.
Great story, and love all the characters, however I can’t say I enjoyed the performance! I found the voice to be too deadpan, and for me unsuitable for this story. A real shame.

Enjoyable book, but.....

I've read this series several times as it's my all time favourite and decided to try the audio version, and I'm so glad I did as Angela Dawe brings the characters to life. It's brilliant and I highly recommend!

Loved this story have already read it on my kindle and was so looking forward to hearing it read to me.
However I was greatly disappointed in the narrator Angela Dawe.
Her voice was so grating on my nerves that I had to leave listening to her several times to give myself a break from it.
The story however I enjoyed very much.
