About this listen

The Vinyl Detective plunges into the world of electronic dance music in his seventh adventure.

Expect laughs, LPs, cats and the return of fan favourites, Nevada, Tinkler, Stinky Stanmer and more.

The Vinyl Detective enters the fraught and frenzied realm of electronic dance music.

Lambert Ramkin aka Imperium Dart, techno trickster and ambient music wizard of the 1990s, has gone walkabout, disappearing from his rather palatial home in Kent.

This isn't the first time he's pulled a vanishing act, but he's never been gone so long before and his wife — wives, actually; it's complicated — are worried and hire the Vinyl Detective to find the old rascal.

They theorize that wherever the missing man is, he won't be able to resist turning up at a record fair somewhere in search of 12-inch white label acid house singles, which he collects compulsively.

And no one knows the world of record fairs better than the Vinyl Detective.

They're not wrong…

Another Great Vinyl Detective Novel

I really enjoy these books, a great series well read with characters that we know and have warmed to. This one doesn’t disappoint. No spoilers though, listen yourself!

Geeky crimes

Not directly record related this time but enough nerdiness to satisfy the listener. The usual great characters. Brilliant.

Great book

Love the gang and their adventures. A bit on the short side, but that's just because I love all the crazy shit and funny business that happens to them. As always superb performance from mr. Robertson. Keep them coming!

Best yet

Really enjoyed the fast pace of this one. Likeable characters and although I disliked the finally disclosed ‘baddie’ from the start, I thought the story would prove me wrong. But the biggest surprise was that I finally worked one out before the end!

I think I've read my last Vinyl Detective book.

I have enjoyed the journey With the Vinyl Detective, Nevada, Tinkler and Agatha.

Noise floor continues the journey of our main characters with some wonderful twists. I was concerned with the journey to a 1999 style rave where I thought maybe we were going too far, but the writer brings home this sequence and revelations with style. I love these characters and the mysteries that they get drawn into and the Imperium Dart storyline is great in a different way from previous novels.

There is a huge but with noise floor and that is the late inclusion of Stinky Stanmer. This late addition and seemingly pointless addition almost stopped me from listening to the climax of this novel. This is a character who is wholly one dimensional and there just to antagonise our main character and to frustrate the reader. A pointless addition that may have killed the series for me. It's a shame that there seems to be a need to continually bring back a character that adds nothing but frustration. I genuinely thought this novel was great until he was brutally shoehorned into the tale.

When the next book is released I'll read some reviews but i can't say I'm eager to return to the series. I pretty much know what'll happen. There will be a mystery, an investigation a great idea from the main character and then out of nowhere Stinky will show up steal the idea and our character will roll over and take it once more.
