Summary
William Anson is done with relationships, thanks. He’s starting the second year of his medicine degree single, focused, and ready to mingle with purely platonic intentions. Meeting Daniel, a barely recovered drug addict ready to start living life on his own terms, might just change that. There are two problems. One: William isn’t out. So glad to have this as an audiobook now!
I have loved this book ever since it first came out (pun completely unintended). I've read it, and the sequel novella several times. So to hear it brought to life in this way is brilliant.
The speed of the narration is faster than what I am used to and it took me a moment to adjust to it. But it is perfect for Will's anxious nature, and within a couple of chapters I couldn't imagine it any other way.
If you're looking for an story filled with messy, anxious, and traumatised characters who all have their own issues to deal with and yet manage to support each other in beautiful ways then this is the book for you.

Great story, fantastic narrator
Let me preface this by saying this isn't the sort of book I'd normally go for. Books about interpersonal relationships regardless of subjects covered just aren't my thing.
That said...
This is a story of a young man struggling to come out as bi and the massive crush and developing relationship with a man. It goes through so many issues typically facing university age young adults as they navigate life.
On the plus side, the author has a great way with words. Juxtaposing harrowing and difficult scenarios with occasional moments of dry humour help to break up the text which would otherwise feel like a mass pile on of personal problems.
On the downside, the dialogue doesn't always work. I listened to the audiobook version of this and so perhaps this felt a bit starker listening rather than reading. But it's not a huge problem and loses half a star for me at the most.
I liked it, but it didn't really change my overall view of stories purely about interpersonal relationships. I'm glad I gave this a go though.
Reviewers criticise Will as problematic for a hundred different reasons. I think most missed the point. He's young, though not stupid he tends to overestimate his own importance to everyone else and his ability to save people. He's a bit of a white knight... and weren't we all like that in our late teens? This doesn't make him ProBleMatIk so much as it makes him human with all the flaws that go with that. His reasons for helping Dan aren't always altruistic but for goodness' sake, the character is a teenager, and we shouldn't lose sight of that.
