About this listen

Sephy is a Cross, a member of the dark-skinned ruling class. Callum is a Nought, a 'colourless' member of the underclass who were once slaves to the Crosses. The two have been friends since early childhood. But that's as far as it can go. Until the first steps are taken towards more social equality and a limited number of Noughts are allowed into Crosses schools.

Against a background of prejudice and distrust, intensely highlighted by violent terrorist activity by Noughts unable to accept the injustices any longer, a romance builds between Sephy and Callum; a romance that is to lead both of them into terrible danger.

Critic reviews

"An author who has worked hard not to be identified too closely with any particular genre, she has built a complex and challenging novel around an alternative version of apartheid." ( The Scotsman)

Great Read

This was a good book that was excellently transposed to an audio book by using 2 readers. Highly recommended for teenagers and adults alike.

Didn't want it to end!

Would you consider the audio edition of Noughts and Crosses to be better than the print version?

I did not read the print version however I am surprised at how much I enjoyed the audio version. It was easy to listen to and still had me gripped at each word and wanting to hear more. The only thing I didn't like was that with the voices you can't imagine the characters voices as much, but that's just a small fault for a reader!

What about Nina Sosanya & Nigel Greaves’s performance did you like?

They had different takes on each character and it was easy to tell when a different character was speaking. I loved that they did have a male and female for both parts as well, it helped knowing whose perspective it was.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! If I had time I would have easily! I hated pausing it because I constantly wanted to know what was going to happen next.

Any additional comments?

The reason I thought to try audible was due to me wanting to sunbathe but not wanting to wear my sunglasses to read, this meant I could lay with my eyes closed and earphones in and still listen to the book! It's a great idea and I loved it.

Brilliant story

Thought provoking, at times shocking but beautifully written young persons novel, can equally be enjoyed by all age groups.

Thought provoking for young people

Really enjoyed this good book that my daughter is studying at school. Lots of insight into how people end up making good and bad decisions in the face of social mores.
