About this listen

Brenden Vetch has a gift. With an innate sense he cannot explain to himself or describe to others, he is able to connect to the agricultural world, nurturing gardens to flourish and instinctively knowing the healing properties each plant and herb has to offer. But Brenden's gift isolates him from people and from becoming part of a community - until the day he receives a personal invitation from the Wizard Od. She needs a gardener for her school in the great city of Kelior, where every potential wizard must be trained to serve the Kingdom of Numis. For decades the rulers of Numis have controlled the school, believing they can contain the power within it, and have punished any wizard who dares defy the law. But unknown to the reigning monarchy is the power possessed by the school's new gardener, a power that even Brenden isn't fully aware of, and which is the true reason Od recruited him.

Written & Narrated Beautifully

It took time to get into the book, delving into it unusual world and it’s unfamiliar characters, but so glad I pursued, for like the magician’s daughter I was slowly but exquisitely drawn into the story and it’s wonderful creation of magic.

A light and entertaining read with spark

A really good book to listen to. It has a really interesting take on magic that made me smile for its Shakespearian comedy-like flavour. It is well-written and its characters have depth to them. I would recommend it if someone needs a bit of sun on a cloudy day.

Loved It

Fantastic book with wonderful moral sentiment to not fear what you don't know or understand. And how the small things in life need to be cherished.

Not bad to be honest

This is a pretty good book and I would really like to hear the next one . The MC is really quiet and likeable My only real disappointment is the narrator...she has a lovely voice don't get me wrong but the reading was so slow I had to turn the speed to 1.35 just so I wouldn't fall to sleep. It might have been a style choice but it didn't work for me.

Had potential, but narrator ruined it for me

I've never dropped a book because of the narrator before, but here we are.

I have a hard time following what's said with the narrator's voice being so slow, dreamy, and with too many... long pauses... in weird places. The story and prose themselves seem up my alley, but after a few chapters I decided it wasn't worth it if the narrator distracts me so much from enjoying it.

The character voices are also often overacted and weird, and sound more like voices you'd make when reading for young kids.

The review

I found this book really hard to follow. When I put it down and picked it up again later I had to rewind a bit to follow the story. However I did enjoy the book.

a lovely story

the pace is slow, but it builds wonderfully and the characters are well filled out with unusual sparkling.
