About this listen

Heroes will rise. Nations will fall.

Behind the towering walls of Belduar, Calen Bryer and his companions stand in defense of the city and its new king. In over a thousand years, Belduar has never fallen. It has stood as a bastion of hope. But the Lorian empire are at its walls once more, and the Dragonguard are coming.

In the North, with Faenir by her side, Calen’s sister Ella arrives at the port of Antiquar. She holds no fear of the unknown. She will see this through, no matter what–or who–gets in her way.

Meanwhile, at the embassy of the Circle of Magii in Al’Nasla, Rist Havel hones his newfound powers in preparation for the trials. Unbeknownst to Rist, he is being watched, measured, and judged. He was not taken into the Circle by chance. There is greatness in him. But great men can do terrible things.

As Lorian forces land on southern shores and Aeson Virandr’s letters of rebellion find their way to the right hands, only the Knights of Achyron see the true danger...the danger that stirs in the darkness.

The coming shadow will not stop. It will consume all in its path. It wants for nothing but blood and fire.

Very good book and reader

I can't recommend this book series enough. The first one is by par the weakest but the quality of the second one is amazing.

Epic

Wonderful sequel to book 1, the world opens up, more characters and the action is ramped to a ten. I personally still enjoyed book 1 more as it left time to breath and saviour the story. Can't wait to start book 3 and continue this journey with a fantastic cast.

It will make you feel part of the story

The story is very detailed and easy to link to the previous book.
The narrators voice is a great match for the type of story, it makes you fall into the story as if you were a witness to the events happening at the time.
Ryan makes you feel like a part of their life looked from the outside, and I like that.

No second book syndrome here

I thought book one was already very solid, but left a bit to be desired. This follow-up basically improves everything, from prose to story and world building.
I did feel like Of Blood and Fire felt like it had a few too many tropes, Of Darkness and Light on the other hand has found it’s own feet. Just all-around solid epic fantasy that i would recommend to anyone!

Another great listen

After listening to the first book in this series, I knew I would be listening to the rest of this story by Ryan Cahill. This story takes place just after the last one finished. The battle for Belduar is brutal. The escape, edge of the seat and not straightforward. That is just the start of this rollercoaster ride.
This, followed by the introduction of new characters, political intrigue and being hunted throughout Epheria, with yet more turmoil throughout its lands, you keep wanting to listen. Derek Perkins makes that easy.
I don't want to give away any spoilers, so can I just say, if you want to listen to a story, epic in scale, then you can't go far wrong with this one.

Compelling Listening.

I am not a massive fantasy reader. Gemmell and recently, Gwynne have been my only references to the genre. I was looking for a similar feel to their books and was recommended this Series. I have been hooked on the story since purchase! Never thought I’d bounce from my usual Roman, Viking and Crusader fare to Dragons, Elves, Dwarves and Battle Mage’s! But here I am, loving it!! About to kick off the third instalment. Characters, fight scenes and storyline have me hooked, I would recommend to anyone, if they are of the same mind as I. Will definitely be reading more of Cahill’s work if it’s in similar vein!!

The definition of epic

Second books are notoriously hard to do well. Especially when you have a strong opening in book one. I'm delighted to say that Ryan Cahill certainly rose to the challenge!

I really liked book 1 but book 2 is an improvement in every aspect: the characters, the plot, the world building and the writing.

We are thrown in the middle of the action from page one and it's full speed from there. That's not to say that the story is rushed. It is incredibly well-paced. One of the main things that helps to achieve this is the meticulously placed POV shifts. Whenever we were given a different POV it felt like we left the previous one in a good place. I never had the "Oh no! I don't care about this character." feeling when we changed POVs.

Yes, this book has multiple PoVs. Some small and some big ones. And they all matter. Not a single POV felt like a filler, they all added something to the story, character development and/or world building.

I loved that we got to follow our favourites from book one, see them mature and grow but we also got to meet some very interesting new characters. Honestly, I was expecting it to be hard to keep track who's who. But that wasn't the case. Cahill manages to give a unique voice to the smallest characters in a way that when you read from their point of view they feel as important as the main characters. Besides creating outstanding heroes, Ryan managed to further develop the character of a villain in this book that I genuinely care about and that's something few author managed to do before.

I feel like I have to mention the writing. I loved book one but in certain places the writing was a bit shaky. Not in this book! The improvement in writing between the two books is astonishing. The sentences flow naturally which makes this 900+ pages book fly by in no time.

With Of Darkness and Light Ryan Cahill managed to create a truly epic story that brings back old fantasy elements and shines a new light on them.

The book gets all the stars! If I gave book one 5 stars it's only fair to go higher for this one. So it gets S/5!!! I can only recommend.

Awesome story

Obviously the author is a fan of fantasy novels and now living the dream as a writer. I've noticed through the novels that delightful homage that has been paid to the great authors past and present in this fresh and exciting series. Bravo 👏
