Summary
Long Lost Family presenter and Radio 5 breakfast show host Nicky Campbell reveals how the simple unconditional love of Maxwell, his Labrador, turned his life around and helped him come to terms with his difficult journey as an adopted child.
Dogs have been the common link between the key moments in Nicky Campbell's life: there was Toby, the dog he never knew and who sat devotedly by his cot before his adoption, and then the adorable fox terrier Candy, who arrived soon after he was happily adopted. Nothing could replace the loss of Candy when he died suddenly, when Nicky was only 11.
Yet it took the arrival of Maxwell, an affectionate Labrador, for Nicky to uncover the simple truth a dog can reveal. The long journey he's been on to cope with the difficult emotions of his adoption, the discovery of his birth parents, his fears of abandonment and the solace he's taken in animals of all kinds, have led Nicky to truly understand the life-changing lesson a dog can teach us: that when we strip away our follies and foibles, the only thing we ever really need in life is love that is given and received freely and unconditionally - just the way a dog does.

If you’re adopted
Nicky has explained articulately and eloquently the feelings of many adopted babies in times before adoption parents were asked to keep crucial information about your biological background
I think only adopted people can fully understand and appreciate what it feels like to not look like anyone else in your family and not know anything about your DNA identity!
To be born to someone else and not the parents raising you brings hundreds of identity questions
Nicky explains the feelings of guilt, betrayal and uncertainty about what you’re going to find out If you decide to search your biological background
An excellent insightful read for someone living with someone who is adopted
Thank you Nicky for being brave enough to share your inner most feelings

Big Fan!
I could listen to Nicky Campbell voice all day, Mr Velvet, so smooth and calm.
This was a very honest and emotional book, I think he was really brave to write about his life and opening up his hart and soul for us to see!
I admire him even more, what a wonderful man he must be to know. x

An insight on the feelings of an adopted child
I thought I’d be reading a story about a dog but Maxwell was the side quest…
It broke my heart to read the author’s reflection on how he saw himself as a child who had been adopted.
I won’t give any spoilers but let’s just say the dogs he knew were the best good boys.
Read with a tissue box close by and don’t be surprised if you forget to eat.

A heartfelt story
Listening to Nicky Campbell’s story had me gripped from start to finish .
Much of it is on him finding his true self having been adopted.
Although not adopted I shared his view on how cruel we are to animals and the frustrations that has brought him .
I am also lucky to share and understand his love for his two dogs first Candy and now Max.
I understand that the special bond between man and his dog and related to the way they make you feel so good no matter how bad you feel .
A great honestlisten that had me filled with tears of joy .

A powerful, intimate and honest story
I felt frustrated initially with Nicky as he appeared self absorbed and lacking in empathy for anyone but himself. But as he began to understand himself, learn to accept himself and those around him the story of his life became intriguing and compelling. Crying as the epilogue was delivered I felt such warmth and compassion for Nicky and his family. A story of family in whatever form that takes.

PHH! where do I Start?
What A complicated story, as Nicky said : you have to be Adopted to fully appreciate the story.
He takes one through all of the emotions of his life, I am glad I persevered and stuck with it.
I can now say : Wow, What a Story!!
